All Hail King Rob!

On an historic weekend for distance running, history makers -the ladies team, returned to the mud to slay the opposition, Rob Shulman stepped up for a 100 mile race, some bloke ran 1.59 in a marathon somewhere and some woman broke a world record in another marathon somewhere: 

Centurion Autumn 100 

Thames Path -Sat 12th & Sun 13th Oct 2019

Rob Shulman took on the challenge of his first 100 mile trail race at the Centurion Autumn 100, comprising of 4 out-and-back legs along the Thames Path and the Ridgeway. Running all day in the rain , encouraged by a damp, loyal team of supporters  including Jane Stephens and Mike Stocks. The rain was heavy as the light faded. Having set off a little too quickly (in keeping with Heathside tradition), he managed to keep the  wheels on track , despite a 2 mile wrong turning, clocking in a time of 19 hours 38 minutes, finishing 15th 1st V50 , from a field of  around 230 starters and 151 finishers. Welcomed home by fellow utra enthusiast and race marshal Lenny Martin.  Rob lays a short-lived claim  to a Club record for a 100 mile V50, which will be surpassed in two weeks by Mikes Stocks representing GB in the World Championships 24 hour race.

Ridgeway Run 15K - Tring - Sunday 13th Oct

Caroline sent in this report "This extremely popular trail run was in its 38th year, and was sold out back in August. Conditions vary each year, depending on the weather. This year, with a good week of rain before it, and on the day, it was extremely muddy (the hills remain the same each year!). There is an elevation of 815 feet, with a number of killer hills, and plenty of roots, and slippery clay and sticky mud, to catch out the less sure footed. It's a really well organised and well marshalled race, with great spirit all round the course from the marshals and competitors. Hot showers, and a club bar serving tea and beer were very welcome! Chris was first Heathsider home, coming in 11th overall in a great time of 1.07, and Caroline won a John Lewis voucher for coming first FV55."

Oxford Half Marathon - Sunday Oct 13th

Seyfu ran another PB (according to Power of 10) to secure 2nd place at the Oxford Half in "not great" conditions. He already has a 67 minute half marathon from the London Landmarks, but that race is not UKA licenced so that time doesn't appear on his UKA record.

Either way you look it, they are both lightening fast times that no mere mortal is ever capable of!

Chicago Marathon, IL, USA - Sun 13th Oct

Whilst a young lady named Brigid Kosgei destroyed Paula's age old marathon record on Sunday morning, back down the road, our very own supermum Sara the serial marathoner was charging towards her 4th Major of the year and YET ANOTHER PB!!!!

She stormed home! Here's her report:

A super weekend here in Chicago. Yesterday may not have been great for Mo but I had a blast! Despite freezing temperatures and strong winds I got a new marathon PB of 3:05:34 placing 8th in age group... absolutely delighted! Ended up in the medical tent with hypothermia but otherwise tickety boo!

Royal Parks Half - Sunday 13th Oct

Over 15,000 runners braved the rain and gusty conditions to take part in this popular annual fixture. Alex Sweet produced a PB and placed very highly in the results.

Met League Fixture 1 - Claybury. Saturday 12th Oct 

Defending Champions, The Glorious Heathside Womens team, set the tone for their intentions this coming cross country season. They produced a quite brilliant display resulting in the fixture win. This was largely due to the strength in depth we seem to have with 10 of our girls placing in the top 50!  Beth Hawling and the Rebeccas tussled up front and eased through the field to all place inside the top 10 with Rosa a few seconds behind in 14th. The Senior mens team placed a solid 4th in a highly competitive race with Tom, Jem and Alex finishing high up in scincilating fast times. 

With Heathside braving the rain and the mud, bringing a large squad to the fixture, they ensured our Vets teams are well placed to challenge for their titles.

Junior report

Conditions couldn't have been more different from the sun of the last 2 years and maybe a taste of the season to come with pools of water and slippery slopes of mud. with 35 young Heathsiders taking part there were a host of great performances with none of the teams finishing below 5th, 8 runners with top 10 finishes and Ben Redland 1st in the U11 Boys and Kiara Corkin 2nd in the U11 Girls Race.

The races started with the U11 boys who were first to slide down the slippery slope just after the start. Ben Redland was in 4th at the bottom but picked off the other runners to sprint home and win his first race in Heathside Colours. Elsewhere saw a host of debuts with Harry Conley and U10's Rory Willis and Zac Bakhshi all producing great runs to ensure the team finished in 2nd place. This was followed swiftly by the U11 Girls with Kiara Corkin holding off the challenge of Barnet runner Jorja Marsh to finish 2nd, one place better than last year. The team was completed by Elkie Baker and making her Cross Country debut Charlotte Beale with an excellent 19th place.

Both U13 teams were well represented. The U13 Boys team were led home by Tynan Parker in 9th place who has taken his strong Track season on into the winter, Benjy Bediako was next home followed by Eric Beale and Kamran Bakhshi who have all stepped up from the U11's last year. Thomas Conley completed the team in his first run for the club. The U13 Girls race was high quality with Abigail Reid of WG&EL first home as she was last year. Issy Watkins in her first club race of the season was 7th just ahead of Hattie Munday in 9th whose time was 30s faster than last year despite the conditions. Milly Watkins was next home followed by Amara Odeogberin.

In the Met league the U15's and U17's run together with the men the first off. Oliver O'Connor was first home in 11th followed by Jake Evans and Ruairi McGonagle in 23rd. The first U15 home was Jack Davis Black 18th and 6th U15 reversing the order of the last NWLL race with Spike Blake 30th. Michael Smith, Sam Ingram, Lucas Maher, Arthur Reed, Kit Naylor (whose time was 50sec faster than last year) and Fred Beale completed the team. The Women saw a close finish with Mimi Blake securing 4th place in a very close finish and over 1 minute faster than her time last year. Rose Garrett finished 10th just missing out in a fight to the finish with two other runners. Mia Manttan was 21st with Evelyn Dumbleton 2 places later and sister Lorna Dumbleton our first U15 home in 35th place. Ella O'Flaherty, who with 1 minute 25 sec had the biggest improvement on time from last year of all our juniors, and Allanese Dacoco in her 2nd XC race completed the Heathside Runners.

As a result the Juniors on 94 points are 3rd overall in the Junior Club standards 1 point behind Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers with Woodford who as home team packed the races out in front.

Many thanks as ever to Ruth, Zac, Russell and Kabir who provide such great support to the runners as well as the parents braving the rain and traffic to get the runners there. Next race is the NWLL at Kingsbury on 26th October.

Parkrun

A bit of Parkrun Action this weekend. On Saturday morning, most of the world was plugged into youtube for Kipchogue's 1.59 so the numbers were down at Parkrun fixtures. There were opportunities to take a victory, and Andy Barnes and Eilidh Wagstaff didn't disappoint in their respective races.....
