Bunting wins at Beachy Head / Tom and Mimi win at NoTT Cross Country

A real mix of running this week, with some headline successes for Tom Archer and Mimi Blake in the U17 events at the North of the Thames Champs and Rebecca Bunting at the Beachy Head marathon. Elsewhere, Mike Stocks had the honour of representing team GB & NI and taking on the world's best ultramarathoners at the IAU 24 Hour World Championships event in France and there was a sub-16 time for Jem O'Flaherty at the monthly Serpentine 5k race. 

Serpentine Last Friday of the Month 5k, Friday 25th October

A handy quartet of Heathsiders turned out for the latest Friday 5k in Hyde Park, led home by Jem O’Flaherty who was just pipped into 2nd place with a time of 15:50. Gareth Marshall was next over the line in 19:12, followed by regular LFotM attendees Gabi Johnson (23:32) and Alun Nash (25:03). 

North of the Thames XC Champs / Liddiard Trophy, Fryant Park, Saturday 26th October

News of a Heathside 1-2 in the junior mens u17 event as Thomas Archer (in a great time of 15:40) and Jake Evans (16:34) led the 10 competing runners home. Joining them for Heathside were Sid Diamond (17:41), Sam Ingram (17:50) and Radley O’Connor (19:05). In the women’s u17, Mimi Blake ensured a double win as she was first home in 17:57, a good 90s clear of her nearest rival.

In the Seniors, LH’s men took 6th place in the Liddiard Trophy 8 to score team event, with Andy Barnes (28:27) and Jack Hardy (29:57) the two frontrunners. David McCormick, Chris Vincent, Mark Jefford, Scarlett Parker, Gabriel Bazzarelli and Tom Haworth completed the A team. In the women’s even, Sara Swinhoe was 13th quickest with Sarah Duke (51st) also running.

Simon Baker sent in this report for the Youth XC league: Half Term plus the weather failed to put off 22 young Heathsiders who took part in the 2nd NWLL fixture of the year at a wet and windy Fryent Park.  While relatively little mud the course featured a lot of rough grassland which was a particular challenge for the younger runners.  The club recorded two team and individual wins as well as two other podium finishes and 9 top 10 finishes.  Outstanding results from all!

The U11 race commenced proceedings with Ben Redland and two other boys breaking away early on to lead the race, in a close sprint finish Ben just lost out to the Dacorum runner to repeat the race order at Greenford.  Chokhmah John made his XC debut with a good 30th place.  In the girls race Elkie Baker showed guts finishing 20th despite feeling unwell during the race, and Eorwyn Brown another debutant in 28th.

The U13’s saw Tynan Parker and Ivor Joslin running together to finish 8th and 9th respectively reversing the order of their last NWLL race.  In the girls race Mia Rosen again produced a fantastic run to finish 3rd in the testing conditions.  Hattie Munday followed her home to finish 6th despite a stitch and Amara Odegoberin was 33rd again finishing despite struggling in the Conditions.

The U15’s saw a good club representation with Spike Blake our first runner home in 5th place with Michael Smith and debutant N Oduro also finishing in the top 10.  The team scoring was completed by Lucas Maher in 12th place to ensure the team finished in 1st place.  Avery Dietrich and Bedo Draskoczy completed the Heathside contingent Bedo in particular digging in to complete the race despite struggling in the now very wet conditions.  Mia Hampton-Phillips was our only representative in the girls race finishing in a fine 13th place.

The U17 races also doubled as the Liddiard Trophy Junior races and the club secured two individual and team wins with Thomas Archer and Mimi Blake both in 1st place.  The winning Mens team event included Jake Evans 4th, Sid Diamond 14th and Sam Ingram 16th making up the scoring members supported by R O’Connor in his first cross country of the season.

Thanks as always to Ruth for her support as Team Manager especially given her disappointment at the All Blacks loss in the Rugby earlier.

The next Junior race is the Met League at Welwyn on Saturday 9th November.

Beachy Head Marathon, Saturday 26th October

Two of Heathside’s Rebeccas took on the scenic, but challenging course down on the South Coast last weekend. Rebecca Bunting finished as 1st female and came a fantastic 13th overall in a time of 3:24:34 while Rebecca Marshall bemoaned an ‘almost verticle climb’ at the start and another at the Seven Sisters come mile 20, but battled through to finish in 4:59:19.

IAU 24 Hour World Championships, Albi, Sunday 27th October

No doubting the most gruelling run of the past week, where Mike Stocks clocked up over 200km while representing the GB & NI team at the International Association of Ultramarathoners World Champs. Covering a dizzying number of 1500m laps, Mike reported that he suffered nausea and didn’t feel very well for over half the day but battled through to place 71st from over 200 men who started the race. Additionally, all the British team managed to complete the 24hrs, a great achievement. Elsewhere in the race, American Camille Herron reportedly set a new World Record by completing 270.116 kms! 

River Thames Half Marathon, Sunday 27th October

A fantastic performance from Julia Bijl as she took on the paths along the river from Walton to Hampton Court and back and finished as 1st woman and 7th overall in a big PB time of 78:28. Great running!

Seyfu Jamaal ran one of the quickest times in the country last weekend and was thus unsurprisingly leading everyone home at Finsbury park! Elsewhere there were loads of Heathsider’s finishing first:, Rosa Serafini (Hampstead Heath), Michael Cockings and Jennifer Wing (both Ally Pally), Amy Cook (Burgess), James Lynch (Peckham Rye), Stuart Meiklejohn (Aldenham), Joel Northcott (Stebonheath, Aus) and Sandra Buckton (Kraherwald, Ger).
