Heathside Red Hot at the Winter 10K!
The Cancer Research Winter 10K in Central London was one of the few races that wasn’t cancelled this weekend due to icy roads and tow paths. Many Heathsiders were due to race the Watford H/M and Regents Pk 10K, instead they nursed Bat Mitzvah hangovers, or stayed in bed, or went out on long distance training runs. (many of whom joined Ash & Co for the Sunday 9am 21 Mile “Hard Tempo Run” to Hyde Park and back)
There was a surprisingly massive field for the Winter 10K with over 18,000 finishers. Not bad for early Feb. The conditions in the centre of town were pretty good if not a little on the cold side. Catrin Tyler laid down a serious marker for 2019 after her recent heroics at the Frankfurt Marathon towards the end of last year, and Ed Samuel was first in for the boys, with Jon Shipley and Joe Pennington a few seconds behind him.
Simon Baker writes
11 Heathsiders braved the cold with 18,496 others to take part in the annual winter run through Central London raising funds for Cancer Research. The race is organised in a series of waves on a technical course which winds its way from Trafalgar Square through the City and back to a finish on Whitehall. The fastest time was registered by Chris Rainsford (Highgate Harriers) in 31:23. Of the Heathside contingent, Edward Samuel recorded 36:29 the 60th fastest overall and 6th fastest V40/44, Jonathan Shipley was 2 secs slower and 7th V40/44. Catrin Tyler produced a superb run to finish in 37:22 -an incredible 5th fastest out of 10,987 women finishers and 2nd in the 30/34 category, this was almost 3 minutes inside her PB and the 2nd fastest 10k by a female Heathsider this year.

In the Hackney Primary Schools Cross Country League, Benjy Bediako (u11) took part in the fourth and final race of the Series on Monday 4th Feb making it four out of four victories and picking up the individual league title. He also had to run most of the race in only one shoe having lost it half way round!
As there was no cross country in London this weekend, Martin and Jackie went farther afield to complete for Deal Tri in the Kent Fitness League. The 5 mile race was in the RSPB owned Blean Woods near Canterbury and both were rewarded with good runs on a cold and crisp morning.
