Marathon PB in Dublin, a new course record in Beachy Head and a trot along the Thames
In this week’s report, we have details of great performances by both young athletes and adults in cross country races in Kingsbury, great runs in the Dublin, Frankfurt and Beachy Head marathons, and an ultra marathon along the Thames.
Young athletes North-West London league cross-country, Fryent Park, Kingsbury
Simon Baker sent in the following report about the Young athletes league from Fryent Park:
“With the cross country season now in full swing 18 young Heathsiders competed in the 2nd NWLL fixture of the season. While numbers were down on the previous 2 meetings, due to half term, there were a number of excellent individual performances with two race wins for Spike Blake and Rose Garrett as well as 2 other top 3 finishes. In addition there were also some great debut performances, so welcome to the world of Cross Country for them.
Although dry there, was a cold wind blowing across the exposed parts of the gently undulating grassland course, which featured treacherous tufts of thick grass if you ventured off the racing line. The meeting kicked off with the U11 Girls and 8 year old Sofia Hunt making her debut run for the club in a race dominated by defending champions Highgate Harriers who appear to be focusing again on this league. Elkie Baker also completed her third race of the season. In the U11 Boys race Benjy finished 2nd catching and passing the runner in 3rd over the closing stages of the race, Gus Kendall had a solid run finishing in the middle of the field. Hattie Munday also produced a strong performance to finish 10th in a very competitive U13 Girls race, she was also not our only representative this time as Alice Reed- raced for the first time this season. The clubs first race wins came in the next race with Spike Blake returning to winning ways, although he had to hold off a Barnet runner in the final stages to win by a second. Ivor Joslin followed in 14th and another debutant Ashley Hunt in 43rd. The U15 girls run in the same race with the only Heathsider Rose Garrett winning very convincingly by over 23 seconds.
The U15 Boys saw the largest Heathside representation with 7 runners led home by Jack Davis-Black in 10th. The other scoring team members included Lucas McNair, Sam Ingram and Lucas Maher all finishing in the top 30. Arthur Reed, Bedo Draskoczy and debutant Karl Beaumont-Epstein all finishing close together soon after. The U17 Women saw Mimi Blake finish 3rd to complete a successful day for the Blake family earning a bronze medal in the North of the Thames Cross Country U17 race which this doubled as.
Unfortunately as most of the Heathside teams failed to have full scoring members the team positions were a little disappointing. However, with 3 more races there is time to recover. In the Club Cross Country points championship Benjy and Elkie now lead the U11s point table.
The races continue to come quickly with the Club's next Cross Country meeting being the Met League at Welwyn Garden City on Saturday 10th November 2018 followed by the NWLL at Trent Park on 24th November.”
Liddiard Trophy cross-country, Fryent country park, Saturday 26th October 2018
There was a solid adult representation at Fryent Park. Seyfu Jammal led the men home, also finishing third in 25:02, followed by Matt Mair (18th), Alex Sweet (23rd) and Jonathan Litchfield rounding off the men’s team. Elizabeth Beard led the Heathside women, finishing 28th (20:52), soon followed by Jessica Vinluan (31st), Caroline White (42nd) and Kimberli Butler (49th). Overall, the men’s team finished 2nd, the women finished 10th and Heathside’s V40 men finished 1st.
Beachy Head marathon
There were some fantastic runs at Beachy Head last weekend, where Rebecca Bunting was finished first lady and also broke the course record. Rebecca reports: “A few Heathsiders ran the Beachy Head marathon at the weekend. It was a brutal but beautiful run with ascents of up to 3500 feet. A real adventure through the magnificent South Downs and Seven Sisters National Park with plenty of hills, steps, stiles and sheep along the way.”
Last Friday of the month 5K, Hyde Park
There were some great performances in the last Friday of the month 5k last week. Gabi Johnson reports: “Lily Woolcock ran a 5K PB (19:21), as did Louisa Pointon(19:58). Karina Kaufmann ran a few seconds over 21 mins in her first ever 5k that wasn’t preceded by a bike leg. Special mention to Lily who then was first lady at Watergrove parkrun in Rochdale the following day and THEN in the afternoon ran in the university of Manchester xc relays ! That’s 3 races in 25 hours!”. Jackie Wastell also had an outstanding run, beating her own V55 club record, finishing in 21:47.
Dublin marathon
Tom had an amazing run in the Dublin marathon last weekend, where he finished 21st. Tom picks up the story:
“Conditions for the Dublin marathon were cold but bright and perfectly still. The course starts and finishes in the city centre and includes a pretty section through Phoenix Park. There are a few hills and around double the total ascent of London - but it’s no Beachy Head! Support was good and the atmosphere as friendly as you would expect in Ireland. I’d definitely recommend it. My race went almost exactly according to plan and I managed a small negative split to finish in a new PB of 2.23:57. “
Frankfurt marathon
Frankfurt was another venue for great performances last weekend. Jacob comments: “A small Heathside group headed to Germany for the fast, flat Frankfurt marathon. A cold, overcast and rather breezy morning greeted the runners as they negotiated their way between the tower blocks. All three got their pacing right from the start and entered the slightly weird indoor finish strongly, with Catrin and Angela running almost even splits. With Josie taking 5mins off her PB, Catrin 9mins and breaking sub-3 for the first time, and Angela completing her first marathon in more the 10 years, it was a very successful weekend. If you want a time, Frankfurt looks to be one of the places to go.”
Thames Trot 50 miles
Four Heathsiders ran in the Thames Trot 50 mile race last Saturday. Amy sent in the following report, making you almost wish you were there…:
“We (Amy, Gail and Sif) ran the Thames Trot Ultra 50 miler on Saturday, crossing the finish line together in the time of 08:41:16, being the 6th “women” to finish of 24 women starters. The day began at registration where friendly Heathsider Pete Bakewell introduced himself to us - we were excited to see a fellow club member so far away from home! The route followed the Thames Path from a very chilly Oxford down to the quaint town of Henley-on-Thames.
We ran over several types of terrain, and the trail was mostly flat with one or two little steep surprises in the second half. There were plenty of gates to fiddle with and a few dodgy orienteering moments but some impromptu songs and chants helped us make it through the tough times. As we were running beside the river for most of the race, we encountered several boating towns, rowing teams, Red Kites and mesmerising views along the way. We had to “check-in” with our timing chips at 5 aid stations en route, and each check point had a cut-off time. The people at the aid stations were super friendly and helpful, offering to refill our water bottles and checking we were in one piece before we continued running.
In hindsight one of the best things we did in preparation for the race was to each pack a fresh pair of socks to whip on at half way! Altogether it was a challenging, adventurous and beautiful run. It was a pleasure to share it together!”
Pete Bakewell also ran, finishing in 7hrs 14mins in 10th place.
Parkruns
Many Heathsiders ran in parkruns this weekend. Congratulations for first place finishes go to: Emma Lakin (Finsbury Park, 20:55), Olivia Desborough (Highbury Fields, 19:28), Lily Woolcock (Watergrove, 24:53), Hannah Arnold (Uppsala, 21:20), Hannah Boyle (Inch Beach, 26:21).
