Storm Den can't stop our 'Liv!
18/02/2020: With Storm Dennis blowing a hooley all over the British Isles, many race fixtures were called off making it a very quiet weekend for racing.
With the XC season nearly finished, February is more a of heavy training month as we are all getting ready for Spring racing. There were but a few fixtures featuring Heathsiders as well some great Parkrunning performances …..
Runthrough Battersea Park 5km & 10km - Saturday 15th Feb 2020
In Battersea on Saturday, Olivia Desborough delivered a superb run to take over a minute off her 10K PB and placed fifth Lady in a very sharp race. James Caven also turned in an impressive run in the diminishing conditions..
In the 5K, Amy Cook held her nerve in the rough conditions to take 19:16 and 2nd Lady.
10K
Olivia Desborogh 36:49 (5th Woman) / PB
James Cavan 38.55
5K
Amy Cook 19:16 (2nd Woman)
Karis Fiorrucci 19:58
SCVAC Indoor Champs, Lee Valley - Sunday 16th February 2020
Mary Kehoe and Scarlett Parker were the Heathside attendees at this veterans' competition at the weekend (though Heathside alumni David Spencer was busy putting in some good performances too).
They were both gluttons for punishment, competing in multiple events - the 60, 200, & 400, plus the 800 on top for Scarlett making for what he describes as “a tough day at the office”
Mary managed to achieve new club records with 9.59 in the 60m and 32.99 in the 200m
Scarlett won a lovely gold in the VM45 800, missing Tony K's club record by 0.11s. It was an interesting race, leading from the front (not his usual style) until he was passed with about 250m to go, but managing to dig in, hold on, and respond on the final bend to come home in 2.15.75.
He also took bronze in the VM45 400 (59.59) and 200 (27.06) shaving 0.3 of a second off his own club record in the latter. He reports: “In the 60 I he was a bit rubbish, having zero explosivity – if that's a word – left in my legs. It was a very mellow if exhausting day, a relief to be indoors, and a pleasure competing against and watching so many inspirational elders. Kudos to all the officials as ever”.
Barcelona Half Marathon, - Sunday 16th February 2020
In Barca, Thomas Clark ran an impressive 77:32 to place 482nd Overall in a hotly contested race.
Warwickshire Tempo Winter Series 10K
Ben Montilla ran a 50:41 in race 5 of the Tempo Winter Series, Warwickshire. A series of five road races run over a course of 6.3miles. The course is the same for each race but is run counter clockwise then clockwise on each alternate date in the once a month series; good winter training as there are a few hills and one quite big hill involved...(complete all five races and a series prize is awarded - and a pack of locally produced sausages at the finish each race too). The course was icy last month and wet and windy for the finale.
Parkruns - Saturday 15th February 2020.
Seyfu ran a quite ridiculous race at Finsbury Parkrun clocking a winning time of 15:18 in shocking conditions and narrowly missing out on the course record. This would turn out to be the second fastest Parkrun in the UK for the day!
There were also first places for Brogan Wallace (1st Lady at Finsbury) and Chiara Borg (Grovelands) as well as 2nd place finishes for Joe Clemoes (Walmer & Deal) and Chris Vincent (Warwick Racecourse) - plus dozens more brilliant Heathsiders running really well at events up and down the country - while I sat at home and did NO RUNNING all weekend!
