Womens vets win and PBs in the Watford Half

The highlights this week include a fantastic new club record and a UK leading time in the 800m from Mia Rosen, a new club record from Tony Killilea and a huge turnout in the Watford half marathon, with a win for Heathside’s ladies vets and numerous PBs. Several Heathsiders also competed at the Southern Indoor Championships.

BMC Meeting, Lee Valley 29.01.20

Several Heathsiders took part in the Falola Dream Mile and 3k Open, Lee Valley last week, from where Simon Baker sent in the following report:

“For the 2nd time this year Mia Rosen has broken the club record and set a UK leading time in the U13G 800m.  This time it was in an Invitational Race ahead of the main meeting.  For a young athlete in only her fourth track race she showed exceptional maturity sitting behind Isabel Tyson (WG&EL) before powering past on the last lap with an impressive kick to win in 2:27.88 a new PB by 2s.  Mia is trained by father Alex, once a fine 800m runner himself in the red and gold of Haringey and Enfield and now sub 2:44 marathon runner.

Also running was Jem O'Flaherty in the 3,000m recording a speedy 8.51.35 with Tony Killilea setting a new V55 Club Record in the B Race.”

Watford half Marathon, Watford 02.02.20

Many Heathsiders went to Watford for the half marathon last Suuday.  Despite the tough, hilly course and windy conditions, there were many PBs. Nick Hodges-Gibson reports, with contributions from Sara Black:

“This was a really well organised race by Watford Harriers. The start is divided into two pens, Senior Men and Women + Vets with pacers all the way from 2:30 - 1:15, making for a slow start for many of us who found ourselves near the back of the vets start on the narrow and muddy path.   Both pens go out at the same time and merge into one path at about 400m.

The first few miles have a bit of incline here and the roller-coaster really started around 5.5 miles in with some serious hills all the way to about mile 9 - Heathside XC season really paid off here.  I've [SB] no doubt the hills grow bigger year on year, I certainly appreciated Richard Peachment's words of encouragement up the first hill!  Despite the hill’s its a really scenic run through some lovely bits of countryside and all closed road. There are lots of marshals and some locals out and about cheering you on and they give really clear directions. There were also plenty of people at water stations.  Its a nice, if slightly uphill finish, back into the now busier park where we started with water, medals and a t-shirt at the end.  Its a good, tough, touchstone before Spring marathon season providing a few PBs, a few course PBs and lots of tired legs!”

Kimon Doullis led team Heathside home, just sneaking in under 1:15 (1:14:51), followed by Graham Wilkinson in a new PB (1:16:49) followed by Alex Sweet (1:17:28).  The women’s did particularly well, with the vets (Sarah Swinhoe, Sara Black and Louisa Pointon) coming first and Sarah and Sara coming 2nd and 3rd V45 respectively.  Congratulations are also due to the many who achieved PBs, including Nick Hodges-Gibson who achieved a 3 minute PB (1:21:33), and Sif Sumarlidadottir who. after a 3 year absence from half marathon running, set a new PB (1.34:34) by 5 minutes.

Portland Coastal Marathon, Isle of Portland - 02.02.2020

Congratulations and sheer awe are due to Mike Kennedy, who, finding cross-country races in the UK too short and insufficiently muddy and flat, took on the hills, mud and inclines in the Portland coastal marathon, after doing 6 marathons in the last 6 months.  He reports:

“It was another month and another marathon for Marathon Michael. This month was a trail marathon around the Isle of Portland on the south coast. The conditions where challenging with 30mph winds, 3 inches of mud, and steep inclines (basically XC on steroids). These conditions energised me to come home in a comfortable third place. I will be heading off to Germany in March to run the Bienwald Marathon. This will be my seventh month of “marathoning””.
