5000s, Chimroy and Preview of Park Run's Return

Lots of action for the Seniors this week including our annual festival of 5000m racing at Finsbury Park, Club records fell the next day at the Sri Chimoy races as well as one runner at the Milton Keynes night of the 5000s. Aquathon and full triatholon action too from Hannah, Felipe and Yuri. As well as the two Adrian’s competing in the Masters Regional Finals. Also included in anticipation of the return of Park Run on Saturday are some Stats on the Clubs favourate Park Run events.

Finsbury Park 5000s

It was great to see Jacob Howe back in London to organise this great event. The sun shone and the track looked as it’s best as over 200 athletes from across the SE of England took part in the 7 graded races. The final two races had pacersthe London Metropolitan University provided physio and there was a fully stocked bar for the thirsty supporters chearing on the runners on a hot summers evening. Fastest Heathsider was Jem O’Flaherty with Gabriel Noaro the fastest woman. Antonio Silva of Thames Valley was the fastest man in 14:34.7 with Beth Hawling (Cheltenham) the fastest woman in a new PB of 16:57.1.

Thanks to Jacob and all the volunteers and officials that helped make the evening so fun and enjoyable. Heathside only results are listed below.

Veterans Inter Regional Meeting, Nuneaton 17.7.21

Although not in Heathside Colours a number of our masters competed in the Inter regional meeting. Adrian Essex reports:- “This season has been a bit slow taking off, but events are coming thicker and faster now. On Sunday 18th July the Veteran's Athletics Clubs from around the country held their annual inter area challenge under the auspices of the England Masters Athletics Association. Delightfully teams from Scotland and Wales were icluded. The venue was the Pingles Stadium in Nuneaton .Four veteran Heathside members took part.

For Vets AC :

Adrian Day (400m M60 66.2s a 7 year personal best and anchor leg on the 4 x 100 M50 relay)

Israel Nworgu (200m 26.5 SB, and a storming start in the M35 4 x 100).

For Southern Counties VAC:

Adrian Essex (1500m 6:39.7 SB, High Jump 1.25m and anchor leg in the M70 4 x 100)

Perhaps worthy of note is A Day's PB in the 400m, a race which doctors and physiologists suggest should be beyond someone of his years. Adrian trains with Israel in a specialist Vets sprints group. It may well be that as a result he is running both faster and smarter.

And remarkable too that the M70 4 x 100 meter relay was fiercely competitive, between 4 teams.”

Well done for the guys proving athletics is not necessary a young persons sport.

Sri Chimnoy 10k, Battersea Park, Saturday July 17

Tom Hollis took nearly three minutes off his 10k PB on a hot, hot Saturday morning at Battersea Park, finishing in a fine time of 34:48. Sarah Swinhoe was the first V50 woman and also broke the club V50 record in a time of 38:37.

Paul Beale was the second Heathsider in a time of 37:18 followed by Matt Collins in 37:59 and me in 38:24. Phil Hogg followed Sarah in 39:34 and Matt Beard in a PB of 40:00.

Big credit goes to Rob Shulman and Eilidh Wagstaff, both of whom ran the club 5k on the Friday night and then the 10k on the Saturday morning. Both said they took it easy on their tired legs but picked up times that many would be proud of with fresh legs – 40:21 for Rob and 45:33 for Eilidh.

Adrian Essex adds an update from the weekend. Two club records from the Sri Chinmoy 10k at Battersea Park on Saturday July 17: Sarah Swinhoe – 38:37 (V50) (ranked 3rd in the UK), Gavin Evans – 38:24 (V60) (11th in the UK)

Splash and Dash Aquathon, Royal Docks 20..7.21

Hannah Yip made he Aquathon debutath the Splash and Dash event at the Royal Docks (750m + 5k) on Tuesday 20 July! She reports “ I came 7th out of a very small field (and probably 1st F), although the 5k felt terribly short and is reflected in the unrealistic time (I would think an extra 4 or 5 minutes should be added in reality!)” A reminder the Club have an active Triathlon Group co-ordinated by Felipe Cardosso.

Dorney lake Triathalon, Eton, 18.7.21

Felipe himself competed on Sunday and sent this report:- “I just wanted to give you a report on Dorney Lake Triathlon this Sunday, the location for the rowing events during London 2012.

Yuri and I took part in the standard event (1.5km swim + 40km bike + 10km run). It was a scorching sunny day which meant that no wetsuits were needed for the swim section. This was my first triathlon and you could tell I'm a beginner by the poor buoy sighting and zig-zag swim. The bike section was a bit confusing as the 8 laps of the course is a bit short of 40km. Yuri had a couple of setbacks after his chain fell off at 40 km/hr and doing an extra lap. By the time we got to the running section, the sun was burning and you could see that most people were struggling in the heat. Still, we both managed to complete in under 3 hours which was our target.”
