Archer targets club 5K record, and half marathon wins in Kent
Heathsiders made the most of the gradual easing of lockdown last week to take part in races in and around London. The biggest headline of the week was undoubtedly Tom Archer’s demolition of the club 5K record, finishing his 5K in the BMC road race series in 14:38. Elsewhere, there were many great performances, including half marathon wins for Rebecca Bunting and Chris Holmes in Kent, and a second place finish for Sarah Swinhoe in the New Forest.
BMC 5km Road Races, Thameside Cycle Track, 10.4.21
Simon Baker reports:
“An outstanding run by Thomas Archer at the BMC 5km Road Races at Tameside Cycle Centre saw him break the club overall 5km record with a time of 14:38 breaking Seyfu's previous record of 14:42 set at Kew in 2019.
Running in the B race Thomas looked comfortable sitting behind the leader around the 3 lap course before taking the lead with 150m to go and finishing strongly. RunBritain rank the performance as the 5th All Time Best by a British U17M! While still U17 for the road Thomas who is U20 on the track will be focused on the National School Championships in July.”

Junior Sprint Races, Finsbury Park, 11.4.21
Simon Baker reports from Sunday’s Junior Sprint races:
Sunday saw Zac run a series of Junior Sprint races as a practice for the Open Meeting next week. A host of enthusiastic Juniors took part many racing on a track for the first time. Having set a benchmark we will see how they improve at the end of the season.
The results are published separately in the reports section. Some highlights included in the U11s who ran 75m Gabriel Edwards recorded a blistering 9.96s which would have been a new club record by 0.5s, Kenzo Tyrell and Rory Willis also recorded sub 12s time. In the Girls races Alice Rockwell recorded the fastest time with 11.55s with Edie Beck and Grace Wood both under 12s as well.
The U13’s saw Ethan Spencer run the 100m in 13.90 with Lucas Steel, Ethan Spencer, Samuel McDermott and Alex Butcher both under 15s. In the girls Tara Sweetnam ran 14.40s with Naya Longo also under 15s.
In the U15’s there were some great performances showing how hard Israel and Mary have worked their athletes. Trey Corlis recorded a superb time of 11.96 and 11.49 just outside the club record. Milton Cooper and Montana Dennis all recorded sub 13s times. The club have an outstanding crop of U15 Girls with Magdeline Paitoo fastest with 12.65s which would be 0.05s outside the U15G club record (and faster than the U17W record). Martha Jolly ran 12.81s with Imani Quamina and Laila Tempesta both running 13.40s,
A great taster for the potential for this season. Thanks to Zac, the coaches and all the helpers.

New Forest Trail half marathon Saturday 10th April 2021
Sarah Swinhoe reports from this off-road, undulating course, in which she finished in 1:28 to come second (first V50):
UK Running advertised this race was being in the New Forest but we're still not entirely sure that we were running in the NF- Strava says that were running around an estate fairly near but not actually in the NF. It was also short of a half marathon but there were no complaints from the LHS trio: Rachel Tranter, Liam Hazelton and Sarah Swinhoe.
It was a super well-organised event - staggered start times meant that it felt Covid Safe. Lots of toilets and hand sanitiser and a lovely race goody bag with socks, a bandana and a medal.
We had the biggest picnic known to woman but didn't get to enjoy it in the NF as it was freezing - base layers and gloves and not bikinis were the order of the day.
It was life affirming and loads of fun to be running again but one of the trio, who will remain anonymous, wishes she'd met better use of the toilets before the race. We had the best day out and the trail was beautiful (if not in the NF)

Sarah Swinhoe 1:28 - 2nd of 262 women 1st V 50
Liam Hazelton 1:31 - 27th of 196 men

RunThrough Chase the Sun Olympic Park, Stratford 14.4.21
Philip Hogg sent in the following report from the 5K Chase the Sun 5K in the Olympic Park on Wednesday:
“Four Heathsiders decided to forgo Wednesday on the tranquil heath to get back to racing at the Run Through 5k and 10k races in East London the Olympic park on Wednesday. Cool weather made for great running conditions for laps around the stadium and nearby paths. Great organisation and covid secure. In the 5K David romped home first, followed closely by Emilia and Rebecca. Rebecca would have finished second woman in her age category but managed to enter online as a geezer rather than a girl. The email line between Rebecca and the race organiser is red hot as she tries to unscramble this administrative complication. In the 10k Phil ran a pb which he's putting down to a forefoot running strike due to a new pair of vapor flys, and is currently mulling over the implications of vapor flys! “
Phil will be happy to discuss his thoughts on vapor flys on Facebook or elsewhere. He also modestly forgot to mention that he did his PB just over a week after running a marathon.
