Jack Davis Black wins U17 XC, Sara Black 2nd woman in Essex Marathon
Racing is happily picking up again, and there were some excellent results over the weekend. Of note, Jack Davis Black came first at the ATW XC series U17 race, Sara Black placed 2nd woman in the Essex marathon, with Filipe Carduso and Alex Sweet both getting PBs. There were also some impressive performances at the Finsbury Park Sprint Tournament, and the Dorney Lake Half Marathon.
ATW XC Series, Merchant Taylors School, Watford 17.4.21
These xc races took place last weekend, and Sara Black sent in a short report on the U17s: “Grateful for another opportunity to race, Jack participated in the U17 2.5km time trial at Merchant Taylors - another well organised event by Active Training World. With 10 seconds between each runner, starting with the slowest person first, Jack happened to be the last to set off. A tough uphill start with logs to jump over (purposefully placed on the course!) and other obstacles on the hilly course, Jack slowly but surely passed the athletes one by one in front of him before winning the race in 8 mins 52 seconds.”

Finsbury Park Sprint Tournament, Finsbury Park 18.4.21
The Club held a Sprint Tournament at the weekend coordinated by Zac who even managed to get the electronic timing set up and a full quota of officials. On a beautiful sunny Spring day the newly cleaned track looked fantastic (although maybe the fine weather led to a number of no shows) but the racing was competitive with Zac organising the meeting with heats semi finals and finals. Both club records were broken but Chloe Savva just missed out on breaking the Club U17W record by 0.04s she went on to win the women’s competition. In the Men’s tournament which was won by Omar Grant of Harrow in 10.79s with Victoria Park runners William Andoh and Louis Menzies Walker 2nd and 3rd Cian O'Connell was 4th and recorded the fastest Heathsider time of 10.89s in the semi-final.
The morning saw a Junior Long Jump Competition with over 60 Juniors, many jumping for the first time, taking part followed by an official competition for Juniors with Sam Ingram jumping the furthest with 5.54m and Imani Quamina the furthest girl with 4.48m.
Of the many great performances, of special mention is Trey Corlis in his first official race recording 12.28s the 5th fastest, by an U15B this year. Also in her first official 100m race Magdeline Paitoo recorded the 16th fastest U15G time while Martha Jolly’s time of 13.29s was the 8th fastest so far this year. Martha had, by a toe, failed to record a 5.08m legal jump in the morning long jump competiton. Chloe Savva’s 12.74 was the 21st fastest by any UK female this year, not bad for her first ever 100m race. It’s looking like another great season of performances and new club records ahead.
Thanks to Zac for organising and all the helpers and visiting Officials who helped put on such a great afternoon’s sport and entertainment.

Essex Marathon and Half Marathon, 18.04.21
Four Heathsiders took place in the Marathon distance and two in the Half marathon distance in this event in Essex at the weekend. Two reports were sent in, so I’ll include parts of both. Sara wrote:
“Another well organised event by Active Training World, this time on a disused airfield in Debden, Saffron Walden, Essex. Alex and I participated in the marathon, I had entered the event with the hope of going sub 3. Alex (bless him) had accompanied me on a few training runs and offered to pace me, I have a tendency to go too fast..... The day arrived and we started off on the course which was 6 laps. We paced the first 4 laps on target perfectly. At mile 20 I could feel my legs getting heavy and started to struggle. The heat was bearing down and there was little/no shade. I started to slow and Alex gave me words of encouragement. Unfortunately, I found myself walking at times during the last 4 miles. Determined to finish, I crossed the finish line in 3:02:26 - although not a sub 3, it was a new PB (by 2 minutes 30 seconds) and placed me 2nd female overall. Alex - the star that he is, carried on although he too found himself slowing for the last couple of miles, it was quite hot out there. He finished in 3:01:48 - also a shiny new PB and a great place to build from for his sub 3 attempt at VLM in October.”
“Jo Irwin ran the Half Marathon, she had a target of sub 2 hours and smashed it finishing in 1:49:52. In Jo's words, Hotter than expected, glad I remembered my SPF, fast and flat (ish) course, rookie error went off too fast (well my last HM was in 2015!), which meant I slowed up on my final lap. Not the negative split I was hoping for but very pleased to hit my target time.”. George Gurney also ran in the Half and had a very impressive run coming in 8th overall, 3rd in age category in a time of 1.11.34
Filipe Carduso also ran the marathon and got a PB, but due to social distancing set off separately to the other Heathsiders there. He wrote: “With Milton Keynes being postponed to late June, I decided to enter the Essex Marathon instead of stretching my training for another 8 weeks. Runners started in waves and I was very happy with my result (3:14:53, a 17 minute improvement on my PB). “ Glen Taylor also completed the Marathon in a time of 4.08.20.
