European Masters Championships in Pescara, Italy, 21 Sept – 1st Oct 2023
Adrian Day sent in this report of his visit to the European Masters Champs where he has been competing and will continue over the weekend:
“Hello. I'm competing at the European Masters Champs in Pescara, an Italian resort on the Adriatic. I think I'm the only Heathsider here - but as there's around 450 in the GB team alone it's hard to know. So far I've run in the 100m and 200m heats in the 65-70 age group; in my strongest event, the 400m, I came second in the heats with a SB of 65.30, fourth in the semis and made the final as a 'fast loser'. My goal was to reach the semi and hadnt looked beyond, so was surprised to find the final was on the same day - which resulted in a slow last place (I know next time to better pace myself with three 400m races in two days). Still very happy with coming 8th in Europe. Oh, and in between the 400 morning semi and evening final I won a bronze medal with M65 GB 4 x 100 team.
Hopefully I will make one of the teams for the mixed and/or men's 4 x 400m at the weekend. Thanks to coach Israel, and the others in the masters sprint training group.
Worth adding there's 4000 athletes here with a great friendly atmosphere - and GB is second in medal table behind the hosts. I'd encourage any Heathsider over 35 to give an international masters event a go. More details here (this site is great thanks to lots of sterling work by our very own Mr Essex). https://bmaf.org.uk/
Will update on 4 x 400s if selected.”
Parkruns
87 Heathsiders took part in a parkrun this week – full results can be found here. Congratulations on first places for Charles Ogilvie and Sarah Swinhoe (Finsbury Park), Amy Cook (Mile End), Alysia Sawicka (Krakow), Annabel Judd (East Brighton) and Alan Hughes (Lordship Rec)
