Big PBs at the Big Half
This week’s highlights include success at the Inter-Counties cross-country championships for younger Heathsiders, a mass turn-out and numerous PBs at the Big Half, the British Masters Track and Field, and the Hillingdon 20, part of the club’s road race championship.
Inter-Counties cross-country championships, Loughborough
There was success at the Inter-Counties cross-country championships, Loughborough, where several Heathsiders represented their county. Special congratulations for coming first in their teams are due to Spike Blake (29th overall), Thomas Archer (12th overall) and Jem O’Flaherty (12th overall).
Vitality Big Half, London, March 10
There was a big turnout at the Big Half last Sunday, a popular recent addition to London’s half marathon calendar, run from Tower Bridge to the Cutty Sark. Gavin sent in the following report:
“A rainy, windy Sunday saw 52 Heathsiders turning up for the second Vitality Big Half on the London Marathon course. By starting gun time the rain had subsided but the wind was still blustery, which, at times made it feel like running through treacle although it was on our tails over the last couple of miles. Despite the adverse conditions there were numerous PBs, and 31 of our runners beat the 1:30 mark (and another 13 beat the 1:40 mark).
Tom Aldred was the first Heathsider in 46th place (out of 17,686 finishers) in a time of 1:10:04 – more than three minutes off his PB but still pretty nifty for a 40-year-old. Michele Bucci was next in A PB of 1:15:45, followed by Marco Serena (1:16:42) and Sion Lewis (a PB of 1:18:41). Ash Abrha was the first V55 in 1:21:16 and Gavin Evans second in 1:22:25.
Olivia Desborough was our first woman in a PB time of 1:23:59, making her the 38th woman overall. Sara Black was second in a PB time of 1:29:07, making her the third V45 woman. She was followed by Tatyana Potiyenko in 1:30:19, and Amber Fahey in 1:31:17.”
Slightly further down the field, there were PBs from Liam Hazelton (1:26:08), Heathside’s representative in Holland, Bas Vlaming (1:36:53) and Jessica Vinluan (1:36:53) who smashed her previous PB by at least three minutes. For Satu, the race was a way of celebrating the passing of another year and she only just narrowly missed setting a new PB.
British Masters Indoor Track and Field
Tony Killilea sent the following report from the British Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend:
“Athletes travelled from every corner of the country for the British Masters indoor track and field championships at Lee Valley on 9th and 10th March; from Cornwall and Aberdeen, from Kent and North Wales. Two Heathsiders also made the trek from North London to, well, a bit further north in London. Both Mark Lawrence and Tony Killilea made the journey worthwhile by reaching finals, albeit qualifying as fastest losers in their respective events.
The officials at Lee Valley did a splendid job of ensuring that a packed programme ran to schedule, but the highlight for many of a trip to the indoor track is the Caribbean food and cake provided by Jackie and her team in the café, and they certainly didn’t let us down. And thanks are due to Dulce, Adrian and Jaime for their support.”
Hillingdon 20
Ten Heathsiders ran in the Hillingdon 20, which has superceded the popular Finchley 20 and is part of the club’s road race championship. Judging from the (lack of) reports about the race, the windy conditions probably made the race tougher than usual. Nick Ohora (2:23:10) was first in, followed soon by Laurence Russel (2:24:53(, whilst Gail Mackie was first in for the women (2:32:47), followed by Monika Newton (2:36:31).
Eton Dorney marathon and half marathon, Surrey half marathon
Jane Stephens and Mike Stocks went to Eton Dorney last Sunday to run in the half marathon and marathon respectively. Jane greatly enjoyed the half marathon, finishing in 2:12:58, whilst Michael, for whom the race was short compared to his usual ultra-marathon races, finished first in 2:52:05.
Meanwhile, eight Heathsiders ran in the Surrey half marathon on Sunday. Alex Sweet led Heathside men in 1:20:59, whilst Julia Bijl had a great run to lead Heathside women home in 1:22:07, finishing 5th woman, followed soon by Catrin Tyler (1:24:41).
Parkruns
Many Heathsiders ran in parkruns this week. Congratulations for achieving the highest ranking position for Heathsiders (2nd) go to Tatiana Potiyenko (Finsbury Park, 20:36), Melvin Lewis (Pymmes, 18:47). The full results can be found here.
