Masters XC, Young Athletes League, & a 6 Star Marathon

We start with Cross Country, and the finale for the season for most club members with the Middlesex Masters XC and Young Athletes league respectively

Middlesex Masters Cross Country, Trent Park, 3/3/19

The XC season reached its finale for most club members with the Middlesex Masters XC, with team Gold and Bronze medals for the V45 Women, and individual medals for both men and women. Report below from Martin Potter ;

“ Sunday was the chance for the older Heathside members to shine at the Middlesex Masters Cross Country Champs in Trent Park. The club put in terrific performance in wet and blustery conditions to round off a long and productive season.

First up was the men, 40 to 49 and 50 to 59. Over a gruelling 6.5 miles Martin Potter prevailed to finish 7th overall and with a silver medal in the V50 class. Martin was closely followed by Paul Jarman, just off the plane from Patagonia, with Francois and Andy Owen cantering home in the top 30 crossing the finish line hand in hand. Sadly no team prizes to be had.

The final race was the women and the V60+ men which completed a similarly tough 5 miles. Continuing his rich run for form, Pete Crockford finished 2nd overall which also gave him the silver medal in the V60 category. Next home was Emily, Satu and Sarah who were evenly spaced like tethered alpine climbers. They remained 10 metres apart after the first lap of the start field and this gap was maintained throughout the race. Satu and Emily picked up silver medals in the V45 and V40 categories respectively. Next home was the ever reliable Jackie Wastell who finished with a flourish to pick up silver in the V50 category. Ruth has a storming run to finish ahead of Emilia and Sally and collected the bronze medal in the V55+ category. Fiona Holland and Ann Woulfe completed the women’s teams. The women managed to finish a very impressive 1st and 3rd in the V45 team events. Bob Gould followed the women home to finish with a bronze medal in the competitive V70 category, all the more impressive as he completed a half marathon the previous week; not bad for someone over 75 years old. “

The last junior club cross country race of the season, report from Simon Baker;

“ Was this a race too far?  The 4th consequtive XC race weekend combined with Mini-Marathon trials and forthcoming school races saw numbers down for the final club XC race of the season.  Dissapointingly the club only fielded one complete team, a stark difference to Highgate Harriers who used the race as a club championship and had a large turnout.  However Benjy and Spike both recorded wins in their races.  The club overall had a successful season finishing 4th in the Boys and 5th in the Girls.

The weather was mild if a little breezy with the ground firm but a little bumpy in places.  The club had high aspirations for the U11 Boys who have been led from the front all this season by Benjy.  Such is his outstanding form he has finished top 3 in all but one race when he was 4th.  He produced a remarkable race here, despite losing his shoe early on he pulled away from league champion Reggie Rock (TVH) to win convincingly and record his 2nd NWLL win of the season just missing out on the league title by 1 point.  The boys team were leading going into this meeting from Highgate who have won this age group for 9 of the last 10 years.  Kamran and Eric both ran well finishing 20th and 22nd having completed in the Haringey XC Race 2 days previously and Eric hampered by a hand injury.  However with only 3 runners on the day the team finished 5th, with

Highgate B just ahead, the 6 points won meant the team missed out on the league title by 1 point making a slightly dissapointing end to the season.

Elkie Baker was the sole representative in the U11 Girls finishing 15th in her first full season running with the club, she finishes 15th overall in the league.  She had also run 2 days previously at the Haringey Primary School Cross Country Championships where she had finished 3rd in a race won by Elinor Chadwick  (Highgate) who won again here to take the overall NWLL league title.

In the U13 age group Hattie Munday produced her most composed race of the year to finish 4th and secured 8th place overall in her 1st season as a U13, which is a testament to her hard work this season.  After injuring himself at Ally Pally Spike Blake returned to maintain his 100% record with his third win.  Only having run 3 times hoeever he could not win the overall title which went to P Opie (Highgate). Tynan Parker ran well for 11th and Max Deasey in 22nd which ensured the team were 3rd despite only having 3 members.

The U15 Boys were the only complete LH team on the day and secured 2nd place overall behind Dacorum.  The team was led home by Bedo in 6th, his best placing of the season. Jack followed in 13th with Lucas in 27th and Kit 30th to see the team 4th overall and secure 2nd place in the League.  We had no U15 girls or any U17's running.

Overall the NWLL saw record numbers of competitors this year and remains a fun introduction to Cross Country for junior runners.”
