Brighton and Rotterdam marathons, East London Half, Thames Towpath 10, a duathlon and sunshine galore
Spring marathon fever continues unabated, and this weekend it was the turn of two popular venues - Rotterdam, and Brighton. Brighton is now in its fourth year with more runners than ever before taking part, 11 of them being Heathsiders. Also over the weekend a large group took part in the Thames Towpath 10, numerous parkruns were run (where notably Dan hit the big five – o, and Sue Rust came in first woman at Finsbury Park), a duathlon at Dorney, and a half marathon in East London.
14/4/13 Brighton marathon
No one sent in a personal piece to me so the race times will have to tell their own story, but times look excellent by all - Leo was first Heathsider in at 3.08.42, David Hellard, pacer for 3.15 came in at an almost perfect 3.14.26, for full results see below.
14/4/13 Rotterdam marathon
James Josephs completed the Rotterdam marathon in an excellent 3.25.25
14/4/13 East London Half marathon Georgie Kennedy did well, and came in 53rd woman in 1.47.51 (chip time)
13/4/13 Thames Towpath 10
Despite the 15 minute delay at the start (probably as a result of only 3 portaloos for 500 participants), everyone enjoyed this 10 miler, run along the Thames towpath – it involved some dodging of dogs and cyclists and potholes along the way, but in the welcome sunshine and with a light breeze no seemed to care. Probably the most notable event of this race was that Gavin Parish, obviously good at multi-tasking, was “helping out” at the birth of his daughter earlier in the day and then hot footed it over to Chiswick for the race before returning to see how wife and baby were doing afterwards – huge congratulations to the Parish family. There were a scattering of PBs (that I know of, maybe more that I don’t) and some prizes were won in a few categories (Julian first v40 – 49, Caroline first V55 and we won women’s team prize (full details listed below). As the race was sponsored by the local Fullers brewery, prizes were of the alcoholic variety – large crates of beer and some wine.
13/4/13 Eton Dorney duathlon
Paul Mercer completed his first duathlon at Eton Dorney and said he had a great experience – he highly recommends this venue which is becoming so popular for all tri disciplines, together and separate. Happy with his running time he is aiming to pick up his cycling socks, as it were.
Parkrun round-up
A scattering of Parkruns took place on Saturday morning, with by far the biggest turnout of Heathsiders at Finsbury Park, where Sue Rust was first lady in a great time of 19.36 and Dan McKeown to much fanfare was completing his fiftieth parkrun – he just missed coming first, but came an excellent second with a course pb for him of 17:33.
Next week is of course the London Marathon, and many Heathsiders will be competing over the 26.2 mile course – please go along and show your support loudly all round the course if you aren’t running– they will be very grateful for shout outs, jellybabies, noise. You might catch a glimpse on TV of Dave Hellard at the start, as he is apparently starting just behind the elites in the championship pen and is planning a sprint start so that he will be in the lead in front of the entire London marathon field at 400m! Then he's aiming for 3.10. This is part of his training for the Sierra Leone marathon in a few weeks in high temperatures and humidity, and as part of a charity challenge for Street Child.
Apologies for any errors, or if I've missed out anyone or any races.
