Cockings Conquers Comrades

FastFriday 2019 – June 7th

The Glorious Heathside made their usual trip to Walthamstow track for Orion’s FastFriday, with a slightly smaller than usual contingent representing. Thankfully we always have good supporting with a decent Heathside crew huddled in lane 3 with beer and prosecco yelling at us as we lapped the dreaded rat wheel for 25 laps. In the first race of the night we experienced every weather condition starting with peeing rain and ending with bright sunshine. There was a gusty top bend to hinder us on every lap, but everyone ran strong. Sion Lewis went with the 34 minute pacer to try to challenge for the victory. This was perhaps a bridge too far for him after his stunning run at Vitality 10K the week before which was probably still in the legs. He held his nerve for a podium third. Julia Bijl challenged for 1st lady for most of the race before pulling off with about a mile to go with injury. Alex, Joe C, Joe Mc, Gav and Jimbob all turned in hugely satisfying track performances by their own standards.

In the second very fast race, Tom Aldred eased through the field picking off runners and taking a respectable third place podium - unable to catch the first two runners who tussled for most of the race 200 metres up the road!

Despite some of the organisers’ errant result listings, these are the actual correct finish times:

Comrades – Sunday June 9th

In South Africa, Michael Cockings represented at the world’s oldest Ultra Road Marathon. The wonderful Comrades runs 87km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.  This year was the “Up” run making it a gruelling first 40K uphill, followed by rolling hills with huge elevation gains and losses for the remainder of the race. Michael held his nerve for a very respectable time that gives him the coveted Bill Rowan Medal for finishing under 9 hours. He placed in the top 10% of finishers. This is one of the ultimate road races and with an incredible atmosphere and spirit, along with that heart-breaking strict 12 hour cut off.

Summer Quadkids

Russell and the Junior Coaches held their second Quadkids Competition of the year on Sunday 8th June.  Again the day proved popular with almost 80 young athletes taking part.  The competition involves 4 events 75m, 600m, Long Jump and Vortex throw.

In the U9 competition, as was the case in the last competition in March, the leading boy and girl were Abraham Lock and Grace Wood.  Skye Kelly produced the highest score of all the U13's with 252 points a 20 point improvement on her March score.  Thomas Conley was the highest scoring boy.  Among a host of great performances were Martha Jolly whose 75m of 10.6 sec and long jump of 3.94m were the longest on the day and Skye Kelly with the fastest 600m of 1:56 and vortex throw of 29.46m.

Thanks again to all the coaches and parents who helped the event run so smoothly.  Results can be found on www.quadkids.org.
