Desborough, Kelk and Hinton win Middlesex 10,000 relay

Heathside was back to racing – some virtual, some real - over the past week or so, although the renewed lockdown will put an end to the real side for a while. One of the many highlights was a win for our women’s team of Olivia Desborough, Julia Kelk and Josie Hinton in the virtual 10,000 meters Middlesex race in a time of 2:02:25.

Middlesex Virtual Club Races, Finsbury Park, Saturday November 1

Simon Baker reports that after the success of the first race Middlesex organised another Virtual Club Race this time with a 10km option for seniors.  The U11s and U13's had to run 1500m while U15, U17 and U20's 3,000m.  Clubs across the County organised and submitted efforts from almost 235 athletes with a relay competition also held between clubs with the three best times in each age group.

We arranged for our Juniors to run their efforts at Finsbury Park, a big turnout of U11's tackled the 1500m on the track and produced a host of great performances  Frido Lawrence produced a great run of 5:44 to finish 2nd overall.  Axel Bournas with 6:03 was 4th and Zachary Boultouak 10th at 6:25.  In the girls race Caitlin Roberts was first with a time of 6:08, Pheobe Wilhoft-King 3rd with 6:26 and 4th in Lila Blustin 6:48 with the girls like the Boys winning the team competition.

In the U13 Boys race Gus Kendall was 9th with 6:12, Dylan Rice 11th and Samuel McDermott 14th.  In the girls’ race Tara Sweetnam was 3rd with a time of 5:46, Amy Kirk 7th 5:59 and Lettice Gundry 10th with 6:07 an improvement of 30 s on the last race.

In the U15 Boys race Ivor Joslin was 5th with two U13's Ben Redland and Thomas Conley also running 3,000m to finish 2nd overall.  Ruby Walls with 11:23 was the first U15 Girl, Anna Pritchard finished 4th with a time of 12:03.

In the U17 Women Mia Manttan was the first Heathsider in 4th place, Lorna Dumbleton was 10th and Fabiene Weston 13th.

In the Women's race, which was effectively a competition between Heathside and The Stagglers, Olivia Desborough was 2nd, Julia Klek 3rd and Josie Hinton 4th.

In the Men’s Race Fabio Espirito Santo was 18th and Club Chairman 20th - generously for the other runners using a very hilly course for his run.

Well done everyone for taking part, especially our youngest Juniors showing the depth of talent we have at the club.

Middlesex will run another competition in January.

Covid-19 Finsbury Park Athletics Series, Finsbury Park, November 4

Simon Baker reports that not even the failed floodlights at Finsbury Park stopped Heathsiders lighting up the track in Zac's rearranged Open Meeting brought forward to beat the lockdown.

Some speedy 200m races started the evening off with Adrian Essex winning the Vets race and Angela Pollitzer setting a new V70 Club Record.  This was followed by our U13/U15 girls with Imani Quamina quickest in 27.7s.  In the boys’ races Montana Dennis was fastest in 26.8s.  The last race saw Leon Searle victorious in 22.6s.

The 800m saw the U15/U13 Boys do their thing with Benjy Bediako in 2:29.8 pulling away to take the win ahead of Eric Beale.  In the 1500m Sam Ingram was fastest in 4:44. The 3000m was an all Highgate Harriers affair before two 5,000m races with Seyfu Jamaal the fastest runner in 14:58 despite stomach cramps.

The meeting saw 11 take part in the Shot Put with Izaiah Turner throwing the furthest 11.63m.  In the Long Jump Carlos Mingoes was first with 5.52m just ahead of mark Lawrence. Of the Juniors Martha Jolly jumped furthest with 4.59m just behind her PB.

Another highly successful evening completed and thank you to Zac, the officials volunteers and athletes for making so enjoyable

ATW Cross Country Race 1,Merchant Taylors School, Northwood, October 31

Sara Black reports that there was rain, rain, wind and more wind for this rare cross-country event - perfect conditions, she says.

‘Jo Irwin, Kim Butler, me and my son Jack all headed (not together I hasten to add) to Merchant Taylors for the event.  Jack's race was first -  U17 5km race around the muddy grounds, he fell spectacularly in the large band of water runners had to cross.  He finished with a respectable time of 20:08 placing 19th out of 52 (his last race as a 15 year old).  The winner was Alex Alston of Bedford and County in 18:14.

‘Kim, Jo and I ran in the U20 & Senior race.  It was an 8km 1 lap around the school grounds taking in lots of mud and a couple of rivines/massive puddles.  The start was very well organised with 8 runners spread out heading off together with the fastest runners off first.  Lots of slipping and sliding which made it all the more fun and was great to see familiar faces from other clubs.

‘I finished in 35:12 placing 21st,  Kim finished in 42:10 placing 55th and Jo finished in 42:24 pacing 56th.  The female winner was Hannah Viner of Highgate in 28:59.  Not sure of splits in age group as we were clumped together with the young U20's.

‘As one of the only races in the country, it attracted some of the top runners from around the UK. A good time was had by all.’
