Porto Marathon, Porto, Portugal, 7.11.21

Felipe Cardoso ran the Porto Marathon under bright blue skies and managed a 9 minute PB –not far off sub 3 hr now! He sends in this report:-

“After 4 months of training, I ran my 3rd non-virtual marathon on Sunday in Porto. The sky was clear, with a high temperature of 15c. The route changed this year due to maintenance work at the iconic Luis I bridge, meaning that we did not ran past the Porto wine caves on the south side of the river Douro. The route is mostly flat along the Atlantic coast and river bank, although the cobbled stone sections were hard on the legs. A new course record was achieved by Zablon Chumba from Kenya in 2:08:55.

I stayed with the 3 hr pacer who was brilliant. He kept us motivated throughout the first half of the course. At this point he was replaced by a quiet pacer who ran the rest of the way. Unfortunately, quite a few of us started falling behind. Especially after a section at 28km, where we went down a narrow street to Cais da Ribeira (riverfront promenade) and back up again to the riverside avenue.

I lost site of the pacer at 30km and went into "damage control mode", trying to make it to the end without losing too much time ”.
