Excelling at Cross Country; Middlesex 10 K and Ealing Half
Our junior Heathsiders have excelled this week with the North West London Young Athletics League and Haringey Schools Cross Country. There are some notable performances reported by Simon Baker below.
The adults also put up good performances with a clear sweep at Middlesex 10K with the women winning overall, with Men- Masters M50 also coming first and the Women Masters coming in 2nd.
North West London Young Athletics League (NWLL) - Fixture 1 - Berkeley Fields, Horsenden Hill, Greenford - 29th September 2018
The 2018/19 Cross Country season kicked off on Saturday with the first North West London League meeting on a glorious autumn day at a very mud free Horsenden Hill, Greenford. The fine weather was matched by the performances of the 26 young Heathsiders who competed and recorded three 1st places plus a 3rd place as well as one team win and two 2nd places.
The U11 girls kicked the day off with debuts from Ella Burridge and Suraya Frost plus Elkie Baker. The team finished 6th behind the winners an experienced Highgate Harriers team.
The U11 Boys, who run with the U13 Girls, saw Benji Bediako continue his fine track form and finish the 1st boy home with Noah Beckloff finishing 5th and Gus Kendall making his debut with a creditable 16th. Despite only having 3 scoring runners the team finished 2nd overall.
We only had one runner in the U13 Girls with Hattie Munday finishing a solid 10th in her first year in this age group. The U13 Boys race was won in a commanding performance by Spike Blake finishing over 20 seconds ahead of the next runner. Isaac Joslin finished 5th and Gregory Beresford-Sweet 24th to place the team 5th overall despite being a scoring runner short.
Our U15 Girl team remains our strongest overall, the race was won by Rose Garrett with Mia Manttan close behind in 4th. Support was provided by Myah Hampton-Phillips (25th), Ellie Friedlander (26th), and Ella O'Flaherty (28th) with the team winning the race by 1 point from Cookham.
The U15 Boys had the largest Heathside representation with Ruairi McGonagle the first home in 5th with Oliver O'Connor (17th), Jack Davis-Black (18th) and Lucas Macnair (23rd) completing the A team which finished 2nd overall behind Decorum & Tring. Other runners included Sam Ingram (27th), Lucas Maher (33rd), Raymond Edwin (36th) and Arthur Reed (37th).
The U17 women's race saw Mimi Blake finish 3rd in a race won by Indra Patel (Decorum & Tring) who is the U17 Singapore National XC Champion and ranked 1st nationally over 5000m. The U17 men concluded the meeting with Stan Brown finishing 25th. This race was dominated by runners from EMS with Mo Ali the U15 National Champion and world age record holder for 3000m crossing the line together with a teammate.
The next cross-country is the Met-league at Claybury on 13th October and next NWLL at Kingsbury on 27th October.
Ella and Benji are both leading their respective LH XC points championship with 8 points each.
Moor Park 10k and Fun Runs - 30th September
Jack Davis-Black ran in the U15 3.9km (timing chipped) Moorpark 10k and fun runs running event at Merchant Taylor's School and won the race with a time of 14.36. Not too shabby bearing in mind he'd competed in the North West London XC league race at Perivale the day before.
Haringey Schools Cross Country - Race 2 - 2nd October
Young Heathsiders again excelled for their schools in the 2nd Haringey Borough Schools Cross Country race at the New River Sports Centre on 2nd October with winners in both the girls and boys races. This and the previous race act as a trial for the London Youth Games XC on 17th November at Parliament Hill.

Belfast City Half Marathon on September 23.
Jack Hardy writes; ‘I decided to venture further afield for my first half since March and settled on the most exotic location I could afford - Belfast. Lingering injuries and virtually no sleep made for an inauspicious start, but this was quickly mitigated by the flat route through the city and an exceptionally fast field. Tough headwinds and the long-steep trudge up the Falls Road derailed my early momentum, but I still made it home in 1:20:37, which was a four-minute PB. I was 53rd overall and, as far as I can tell, the third English club runner. However, a foolish decision to fly home hours later with creaking legs made it clear that races closer to home are something to relish!’
Middlesex 10k, Victoria Park, Sunday 30th September
At least 44 Heathsiders ran in the Middlesex 10k on Sunday, the last in the club’s road race series, involving 3 laps around Victoria Park. Conditions were good with the flat course making for some great runs, despite a bit of a headwind on one of the long stretches.
Heathsiders were led home by Seefu Jamaal in a super fast time of 32:11, finishing 6th overall, followed by Andy Barnes (34:34) and Lemi Mideksa (34:42). Rebecca Piggott also had a speedy run to finish in 37:04 and 3rd overall, soon followed by Bethany Scott (37:38) and Olivia Desborough (39:01). Several achieved PBs, including Nilesh Goswami and Tom Bedwell, whose persistent training at shorter distances helped him to knock off four minutes sfrom his PB (38:42), whilst Tamela ran her second fastest 10k time ever (45:06). Overall, it was a successful morning for Heathside, with several winning county medals, including Seefu Jamaal (seniors), Rebecca Piggott (senior F), Bethany Scott (senior F), Mark Jefford (V50), Pete Crockford (V60) and Nick Dodd (V60).
Ealing Half Marathon, 30th September
Over at the Ealing HM, three London Heathside women finished in the top 7 over the rolling closed road course that twists through almost every street in Ealing. Josie, Celine and Catrin were delighted to run big PBs, with Josie coming second in the race, and Celine bagging an age group prize. They were also pleased to take the scalp of Commonwealth medalist and Olympian marathoner Mara Yamauchi.
