Fred Hughes 10 mile Road Race
This weekend saw a large contingent of Heathsiders at the first race of the 2014 Rob Jackson Road Race Championships, the Fred Hughes 10 mile race in St Albans. We had 34 Heathside finishers and returned home with the second men's team prize and first male vets. Elsewhere Julia and Tom took part in a tough challenge in Anglesey, covering ultra distances in deep mud - perhaps taking their Met League training for Wormwood Scrubs to extremes.
In St Albans, Gavin Evans reported that the conditions were good, despite a few puddles (the course had been re routed to avoid the flooded areas). It was nevertheless a hilly route and there are some great results to report. Our first man home was Andrew Brooker (who had also won the Walthamstow parkrun the day before) and our first woman home was the unstoppable Cathy Jeremiah.

Elsewhere Tom and Julia took part in the Endurance Life Coastal Trail marathons in Anglesey. Julia reports that the entire course was under deep water or mud, there were mountains to be scrambled over and in some places the mud was thigh high. Sounds like a lovely weekend away, Julia. Hope to see you both at Wormwood Scrubs on 8 February for the last met league fixture! Emerson Paul likewise took part in an off road race, the Benfleet 15 in Essex, billed as a challenging multi terrain course, incorporating sections of Canvey Island sea wall and the undulating Hadleigh Downs.
On Saturday Briony Fane took part in her first ever race walk organised by the Enfield and Haringey Athletics Club and finished 2.5 miles in just over 28 minutes.
