Fun in the sun, but fourth in first SAL match
Here's a run-down of last weekend's track and field action, with special thanks to John Flahive for the SAL report. LICC results are included at the bottom; a separate report for road races will follow.
We had mixed fortunes at the opening Southern Athletics League fixture at Watford. On the positive side, there were many good performances, but we came fourth and last in the match.
Note: The next SAL match is on 17 May in Cambridge - dig out your vest and stick it in your diary!
Our men's sprinters were in fine form putting in a top class 4 x 100m relay performance which not just won the race easily but was one the fastest on the day across the entire league. Before that Jordan and Emmanuel scored double firsts in the 100m.
Filmon Russom put in exceptional performances in Triple Jump (12.52m) and 400m (52.6) as well as a good second in the Long Jump (5.51) shortly after his 400m, and finished off the day in the 4 x 400m where he almost clawed back a large gap on the last leg.
Other big points contributors were Israel Nworgu with a double first in 110m and 400m hurdles, and Izaiah Turner and Nathan Cyrus, who covered several throws.
Our coming last was principally due to the large gaps in our turnout, particularly on the women's side where had just 5 women, mostly due to so many being away for Easter weekend. A changed scoring system worked against us where, although it was a 4 team match, positions scored 5,4,3,2 This is due to there being some matches with 5 teams. Under last year's system we wouldn't have been last.
Gina, Helene-Mary, Renae, Shirian and Suzette were all making their SAL debuts and covered several events including having a bash at some field events. Other SAL debutants were Ashley Braithwaite, Ezzy Vdeh, Chris Jones, Sam Thompson.
Special mentions should be given to Adrian Essex who added the 2000m Steeplechase to his near clean sweep of M60 club records, and Dan McKeown who volunteered for the 400m Hurdles just 6 days after the marathon and proved himself to be pretty adept at the event coming a clear second and first B-String.
I should thank everyone who officiated and gave up part of their Easter Weekend, Ivor, Jerry, Paul, Suzette and Gianni, the last three who were also competing.
The results show that with a full turnouts we would be strong contenders for winning matches in this division - let's try to get some bods out for next time! It's usually a great day out in the sun, good opporunity to take a picnic and have a laugh with your fellow Heathsiders and if (heaven forbid) you're thinking you may not be good enough for this level, take a look at the below (via Abingdon AC, with thanks to Gina).
