Garrett wins u20 5000m; Triffic Trail; Golden Stag Mile results
30.06.19.... covering all competition up to week ending June 23rd. Ed Garrett reports on his boy's stunning turn in at the English U20 Champs and Barnet host their very good Stag Mile Open Meeting at our wonderful home.....
England Athletics U23 and U20 Championships, Bedford, Saturday 22nd June
As mentioned in a Stop Press! in last week’s report, there was success on the national stage (and televised!) for some of our young Heathsiders up in Bedford. Proud Dad Ed Garrett has more:
“On a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon, Liam Garrett, Seyfu Jamal and Jem O'Flaherty traveled to the England Athletics U23 and U20 Championships in Bedford to compete in the U20 5000m final. A crowded field saw unfancied runner Leon Wheeler break away after just one lap. The rest of the pack - led at times by Jem, and for several laps by Seyfu - wisely ignored him, and Seyfu finally caught Wheeler and took the lead at 8 minutes in. When the favorite Chris McLeod made a confident "declaration of intent" at the 10:30 mark, he pulled three runners with him, but the effort may have been too taxing; he moved into lane 2 and looked back, inviting others to share the load. Liam saw his opportunity and accelerated ahead, establishing a considerable lead heading into the final 800m, during which he pushed the pace, holding off a late challenge to beat Cameron MacRae by 0.99 seconds. It was an excellent run by the "diminutive yet powerful figure of Liam Garrett" (BBC), whose winning time was 15:10.34. Seyfu finished 8th in 15:22.22, and Jem - in a bold first race back from injury - was 14th in 15:43.86.”
Huge congratulations to Liam and well done too to both Seyfu and Jem.
Golden Stag Mile, Finsbury Park, Friday 21st June
PBs galore (and I believe even a WR in one of the women’s vets categories!) at the track last week as another successful evening of mile running with our friends at Barnet & District took place. Fastest Heathsiders on the night were Stuart Mieklejohn in 5:04.16 and Tom Haworth in 5:05.83 in heat #13 but there were impressive runs wherever you looked and a good night was had by all. Full Heathside results below as usual.
Triffic Trail, Trent Park, Sunday 23rd June
Caroline White was one of 27 Heathsiders who turned out for this annual trail 10K race at cross country favourite Trent Park. She writes: “It was a warm, sunny day, and the hills don't get any easier! Liam breezed home first Heathsider, in 41.51 with Lennie 2nd Heathsider just behind him. Chiara Borg had a great run and was 3rd woman overall. A very well organised race, with plenty of marshals, very generous goody bag, t shirt and watermelon definitely making it a race to put in the diary for next year.”
Middlesex Young Athletic League, Meet #3, Parliament Hill, Sunday 23rd June
More promising performances from our younger athletes at the latest MYAL meeting down the road at Parliament Hill, with Heathside trailing Highgate overall but well placed and leading the way in the girls’ u11 and u13 categories and the boys u11s. Individual highlights include Lucas Maher setting an u15 club record in the 300m and u17 Mia Manttan going under 5 minutes in the 1500. Full results below as usual, with thanks to Simon Baker for compiling them all.
And a full report from Simon here:
Sunday 23rd June brought the third MYAL meeting at Parliament Hill. Despite the sticky hot conditions there was a strong breeze but this failed to deter the large Heathside team who recorded a host of excellent performances. The team went into the match in 2nd place overall just 1 point behind SBH, and again performed exceptionally well finally finishing the meeting in 2nd behind Highgate Harriers who as the home team were able to field athletes in most events.
The 14 U13 Girls who competed for the club produced a commanding team performance to win the age group typified by Laila Tempesta who would have set a new club 100m record of 13.43 but for the wind being 2.1, she then jumped 4.47m in the Long Jump a PB by almost 60cm and both new club and meeting record as well as the 38th furthest nationally this year. In the high jump both Skye Kelly and Hattie Munday set a new club record with 1.41m (the 26th best nationally). Mia Rosen made her debut for the club in the 1500m recording the 2nd fastest time and only 2 sec outside the current club record. Great support was provided by Lucy, Danae, Issy, Fleur, Amara, Ella, Ella-May, Maia and Kavya.
There were 10 U13 Boys competing and again they won the age group. Thomas Wassermann won the Hurdles and High Jump with Tynan Parker winning the shot put as well as the B string 1500m and securing 2nd place in the discus. Benjy Bediako finished 2nd in the 1500m recording his first sub 5 minute time as well as 3rd place in the 100m. Montana Dennis recorded PB’s in the 100m and Hurdles. While Eric, Ivor, Greg and Thomas ensured the LH train was alive and kicking in the non scoring 1500m race.
The U11 Girls made it three wins from 3 with Suraya Frost again producing two PBs in the 75m and Long Jump again setting a new meeting record and breaking her previous U13 club record. She is undefeated this season and her long jump is the furthest by an U11 outdoors this year. This meeting saw the debut of Paloma Guisset who produced a great long jump to win the B string competition as well as 4th in the 75m. In the 800m both Kiara Corkin and Elkie Baker took big chunks off their PBs in excellent races both finishing 2nd in photo finishes. Elkie finished 2nd in the Vortex with Kiara winning the B string. Willow Bouch and Sidney O’Brien also made their club debuts.
The club had 11 U11’s boys competing finishing 2nd overall, their highest place this year. Jason Edwin won the Long Jump while Chokmah John, Levi Simmons, Sam Turner, Axel Bournas and Max Wasserman all contributed important points.
The U15 Girls finished 5th. Fabienne Weston scored valuable points in all the long throws as did Maya Komolafe in the 100m, Hurdles and Long Jump. Maia Hampton Phillips produced a solid run in the 1500m with Mia Talbot contributing in the long jump and 100m. In the U15 Boys Chris Budden and Edwin Robson secured 2nd places in the Javelin and Long Jump respectively. Lucas Maher set a new club record in the 300m to ensure the team secured 7th place overall.
The U17 men finished in 2nd place. Benjamin Folarin (100m) and Sam Ingram (Long Jump) both finished 2nd in their events. With important school matches coming up our middle distance runners opted for field events Thomas Archer throwing the Javelin and Ruairi McGonagle the Shot. Jake Evans flew the flag in the 1500m finishing 3rd. The U17 women made 3rd place with second places for Erin Heritage in the Javelin and Lanee Frederick in the Long Jump. Rose Garrett and Mia Manttan secured a double win in the 1500m with Mia recording a new meeting record with her first sub 5 minute run of the year.
So after three meetings and one left at Allianz Park on Sunday 21st July the club remain in 2nd place behind Highgate but ahead of Shaftesbury. Well done to all the athletes, coaches, the team managers Ruth and Mary, officials and parents who helped.
