Heathside junior women win Met League gold
This week’s report focuses on the final Met League meeting at Trent Park where U13 Filip Kounoupas took gold as did our junior women, and the overall Met League standings, which also saw our junior women coming first while our senior women and U11 girls came second and our men, third. The report also features the Masters champs at Lea Valley which saw Ivan Ross breaking the M50 club record in the 60m hurdles (10.98) and Adrian Day taking a gold medal in the V65 400m (66.74). And at the England indoor junior championships in Sheffield, Trey Corlis ran a PB and club U20 record in the 60m hurdles (8:10).

Metropolitan League, Trent Park, February 8
As always, there was a strong Heathside turnout for the final Met League meeting of the year – both from our runners and from our many marshals.
There were several impressive performances and none more so than our U13 star Fillip Kounoupas who completed the muddy 3,000m in 11:57. A strong team performance saw our junior women (U15 & U17) coming first, as they did in the overall Met League standings.
Among the seniors, both our men’s and women’s teams came third in Trent Park. The first Heathside women was Jessica Prior’s in eighth place followed by Josie Hinton in 10th. Our first man was Sam Macaulay in 18th place. As always V45 Tom Aldred put in an impressive run, coming second in his age group and 32nd overall.

Vets AC and Eastern Masters Champs at Lea Valley, Sunday 9th February
Adrian Day reports that a sextet of Heathsiders avoided the rain and cold by competing across a range of indoor disciplines on Sunday. This event is open to all masters athletes and includes the club championships for Vets AC (London’s regional masters club) and Eastern Masters (which embraces East Anglia); medals are only awarded to club members.
Helen Kehoe made a fine showing in the Shot Put - placing second with a throw of 7.15 meters, whilst Paul Egan made his masters indoor debut in the M40 group with a 60m timed at 8.28s.
Adrian Essex (M70) pulled off his usual trick of competing in different events at the same time. He managed 8.06m in the Shot, came second in the Long Jump with a leap of 3.72m and 3rd in the High Jump clearing 1.15m. Of course that wasn’t enough to keep him occupied so he ran a single lap of the track to boot.
Ivan Ross (M50), Mike Salousti (M60) and Adrian Day (M65) attended from Israel’s masters training group. Ivan broke his season’s target and the club record for the 60m hurdles by dipping under 11secs in a time of 10.98. And Mike’s warm weather training in Cyprus yielded results as he notched season’s bests of 8.93 for the 60m and 29.48 in the 200m.
Adrian Day squeezed in three sprint events over the day. A time of 66.74 in the 400m delivered a Vets AC gold medal (and was a second faster than at the same event last year) but that effort took its toll on a slow 60m of 9.63 (a Vets bronze) and a 200m time of 30.31, which apparently merited another Vets gold medal.
Next up - the British Masters at the same venue at the end of the month.
England Athletics U15/U17/U20 Indoor Championships, Sheffield, Saturday February 8
Simon Baker reports that there were slightly mixed fortunes of our five young athletes who took part in the English Indoor Championships last weekend in Sheffield. First of all with qualification standards just making the Championships is an achievement.
In the U17M 200m Mikel Alexander was initially false started but after his coach Israel appealed Mikel was allowed to run a 200m on his own. In front of a large crowd and in his first national Championships that was a daunting challenge and he recorded a time of 23.67s finishing 18th fastest.
Gabriel Edwards entered the Championships ranked 2nd U15B in the UK but such is the jeopardy of the hurdles he caught the 2nd barrier heavily and was unable to finish.
In the U17M hurdles Malakai negotiated the heats and semi-final safely before running a 8.31 PB in the final to finish 5th.
In the U20 hurdles Trey Corlis and Montana Dennis were both drawn in Heat 1. Montana in his first year as an U20 finished 5th while Trey broke his club record with 8.10s just missing out on a place in the final by 0.03s.
Well done to all and I'm sure they will take the experience to come back stronger in the summer.
