Heathside trio win fruit at Hasty Hare

Highlight of the week was the ‘Hasty Hare’ Sri Chinmoy 5k at Battersea Park, which saw fruity prizes for 13-year-old Rose Garrett as the first under-16 girl, 61-year-old Michael Abrahams as the first V60 and Kelly Thorneycroft as the fifth woman. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Liam Garrett cantered in as the first of 32 Heathsider home and the second boy under 16.

Meanwhile, our Adrian Essex is representing Britain in the European Masters championship in Aarhus, Denmark, and we’ve heard he was part of the silver medal-winning 4 x 100m squad. More next week.

Sri Chinmoy ‘Hasty Hare’ 5k, Battersea Park, London, Monday August 7

This well-stocked race (260 finishers) was run in optimal conditions on the flat and fast two-lap Battersea course – cool, windless with a just a hint of drizzle. The result was a brace of PBs from the 32 Heathsiders, all of whom broke 24 minutes, with 18 getting under the 20-minute mark, including four of our women.

First home from our lot was 15-year-old Liam Garrett who was just seven seconds behind the Chelmsford lad who was the first U16. Liam’s time was an eye-rubbing 16:35. Behind Liam, in quick succession, were Simon Dunderdale, Pete Bakewell and Andy Barnes, all under 17 minutes with the first two of them getting PBs. But the only male fruit-winner was Mike Abrahams, who was the first V60 in a time of 20:57.

Our first woman was Kelly Thorneycroft, who sets herself commendably high standards. So she was slightly disappointed in her PB of 18:01 as she’d been hoping to break 18-minutes. Still, she won a piece of fruit and a chocolate as the 5th woman (a nice touch from the Sri Chinmoy people – although Kelly wasn’t around to collect it).

The second Heathside woman was the rapidly-improving Eilidh Wagstaff in a PB time of 18: 51. Third was 13-year-old Rose Garrett in 19:12 – a time that won her the prize for the first girl under 16. She was followed by 21-year-old Lily Woolcock in 19:34. Kelly, Eilidh and Lily are all in their 20s with years of improvement to come, which augers well for our cross-country future.

Also worthy of mention are Luisa Pointon, who, despite nursing an adductor strain, put in a PB time of 20:38 and Sue Eedle, who was the third V60 woman in 24:12

Regent’s Park 10k series, Sunday August 6

Simon Brown and Ed Adams put in a solid performances in the Regent’s Park 10 series on Sunday, with Simon arriving in 12th place in 36:05 and Ed coming 36th in 38:24. There were at least five Heathsiders among the 583 finishers.

Bearbrook 10K - Aylesbury Bucks, August 6

Club stalwarts Martin Potter and Jackie Wastell ran together, holding hands, in the Bearbrook 10k in Aylesbury on Sunday. Martin reports there were good conditions for the single lap course, with an uphill first half with downhill second half. They both came in at 45:59, giving Jackie 3rd place among the V55 women. For Martin it was a big PW.
