Heathside U17s win Southern Road Relays

There were rich pickings from the Heathside weekend results at the weekend. These included a first place for our U17 women in the Southern Road Relays (Hattie Munday, Ruby Walls and Izzy Watkins), firsts for Seyfu Jamaal (30:37) and Amy Cook (a 37:58 PB) in the Middlesex 10k and a V50 PB of 34:35 for Ed Boden in the same race, a PB of 2:32:56 for Conor Brown in the Berlin Marathon, and a PB plus club V50 record of 2:41:24 for Steve Pennington, also in Berlin.

Southern 6/4/3 Stage Road Relay Championships, Crystal Palace, Saturday September 24

Simon Baker reports on our two winning girls teams from the Middlesex Road Relays heading to Crystal Palace to take part in the 3 x 3000m Southern Road Relays:

“While many clubs had opted for the alternative races at Aldershot there was still plenty of talent on show.  The Young U15 girls team finished in 7th, a great result considering all three were in the 1st race as U15s.  Lettice Gundry started the team off passing over to Amy Kirk in 9th place who managed to improve the team into 7th place with Kiara Corkin continuing to push they finished only 7s behind 6th placed VP&TH.

“Our U17 women have had a strong track season and demonstrated their potential for this season’s cross-country by taking the gold medal.  Hattie Munday got the team off to a great start in 3rd place. Ruby Walls managed to overtake the teams ahead which allowed Izzy Watkins, the Southern U17W 800m Champion, to move further way with the 2nd fastest leg of the race and take gold for the team.”  The U17s finished 43-seconds ahead of second placed South London Harriers.

Berlin Marathon, Sunday September 5

At least nine of our runners travelled to the world record course in Berlin for Sunday’s marathon.

First home was Conor Brown in a PB time of 2:32:56. He ran a commendably evenly-paced race, going through the 10k in 35:54, the half in 1:15:39 and doing the second half in 1:17:17.

He was followed by Steve Pennington in 2:41:42, which broke his own club V50 record by 2:07 – a PB.  Among the Heathsiders he was followed by Steve Lamont (a PB of 2:50:28), Sammy Keenan (2:58:14) and Marcus Brown (2:59:12).

Our first and only woman in the race was Emily Reichert who ran splendidly in her debut marathon, finishing in 3:09:26.  She paced it well, completing the first half in 1:32:24 and the second half in 1:37:02.

Behind Emily were Lixx Diaz (a PB of 3:28:45), Gllen Taylor (3:30:01) and Chris Magienek (3:50:03).

Wimbledon Half Marathon, Sunday September 5

Rebecca Taylor reports that she and Aaron Smith from the Tuesday YMCA group ventured to South West London for the Wimbledon Half:

“Marketed as "flat", the course actually included a hill a bit like Winnington but longer, which half marathon runners (there was also a 10k) had to do twice.

“Aaron was pleased to finish in 1.54.43, knocking five minutes off his half marathon PB. Rebecca didn't run nearly so well finishing in 1.58.38, several minutes outside her PB.

“The race was well organised and the crisp sunny weather was perfect.”
