Heathside Youngsters Place High in the MYAL

Another afternoon of fantastic athletics rounded off the MYAL league on Sunday with a great turnout of Juniors.  The format of the last session was changed to feature just relays on the track.  A great opportunity for more athletes to take part but it had proven a massive organisational challenge to Team Managers Mary, Ruth and Rachel as the meeting also comes at the beginning of the school holidays.

The U11 Girls completed their clean sweep and have won their age group in all the meetings.  While most points have been contributed by Suraya Frost who again won the long jump competition Kiara Corkin and Elkie Baker have constantly provided support all move up to the U13’s next year having developed as talented young athletes.  With Kiara away it was a chance for some of the younger athletes to get a taste of competition.  Erin Jolly won the B string Long Jump with an excellent 3.20m and Nina Walters was 3rd in the B string vortex.  They were joined by Maya Westgate, Erowyn Brown, Natasha Rockliffe in the relays the best of which was the 2nd place in the 4x200m behind a well drilled BeFit squad.

The U13 Girls are a team brimming with talent, so much so that they filled both the U13 and U15 teams and were still able to complete their 4th age group win.  The platform was set by the relay teams with 2 2nd places and a win in the 4x200m with the team of Amara Odeogberin, Hattie Munday, Tiffany Pieterse, Ella Mia Hancock, Martha Jolly, Maia Barnes and Fleur Eltingham blending sprinters with middle distance runners.  Fleur and Martha secured a clean sweep of the Long Jump competition while Taylor Dennis, Kavya Gulati and Tamsin Pieterse secured 2nd places in both A and B string Javelin and Shot Put competitions.

The U15 Girls saw a number of U13’s step up and challenge themselves against girls often 2 years older no more demonstrated by the 2nd place in the 4x100m where Imani Quamina, Mia Rosen, Skye Kelly and Laila Tempesta who are all U13 finished 2nd.  Other girls contributing to the relays included Maia Hampton-Phillips, Mia Talbot, Anna Pritchard and Ella O’Flaherty.  In the field events Skye jumped 1.30m to secure 3rd place in the High Jump with Anna winning the B string and 4th place in the Hammer.  In the Long Jump Imani finished 4th with 4.21m while Laila was 3rd in the Shot throwing 7.13m.

Mia Manttan and Fabienne Weston (stepping up from U15) were the sole U17 representatives Mia finished 2nd in the High Jump clearing 1.40m while Fabienne produced her reliable performances in the Shot Put, Discus and Hammer to pick up vital points.  Mia went on to anchor the girls A string Medley relay team with Suraya, Fleur and Skye to first place with a blistering 800m to leave the rest of the field trailing. The B Team of Eorwyn, Martha, Mia and Ella also produced a gutsy run to finish 2nd in the B string race.

The U11 Boys won their first meeting of the year with a great all round performance typified by the 3x600m relay with Eden Brown and Axel Bournas handing the batten to Ben Redland in 2nd place the gap was closed before Ben hit for home at the 200m mark to finish 1st.  The team finished 2nd in the other two relays with contributions from Kaine Khan, Louis Munslow Ong, Jason Edwin, Elijah Kwandahor, Chiyal and Chokhma John.  In the field events Kaine debuted with 3.64m in the long jump with Jason ensuring a A and B string win.  Max Wasserman secured 4th place in the Vortex.

The U13’s also won their age group to complete the set.  Again the highlight of the relays was the 3x 800m with Benjy Bediako securing victory with a blistering last two laps after great work by Tynan Parker and Henry Pulmann.  Montana Dennis, Finbar Collins, Gregory Berrisford-Sweet and Thomas Wassermann helped the team to top 3 finishes in the other two relays.  In the field Benjy produced a PB of 4.52m to win the long jump  with Henry winning the B string.  Thomas Wasserman won the javelin and B string Shot Put with Tynan Parker winning the A string.

The U15Boys Relay Team of Tyreese Rodne, Elshuah Henry, Caleb MacBruce, William Johnson, Avery Dietrich and Joshua Ndionyema produced a commanding run to win the 4x300m also finishing 2nd in the 4x100m.  Etienne Munday improved his High Jump best by 15cm clearing 1.60m winning the event, he also produced a PB of 4.98m to finish 2nd in the long jump with Tyreese winning the B string. Elshuah and Tyreese also recorded top 2 finishes in the discus.  In the Medlay team Kaine, Montanna, Joshua and William led from the start to win the A string.  The B string team of Chokmah, Tynan, Elshuah and Gregory finished the 2nd B team, credit mist go to Greg who an U13 stepped in to run the 800m leg effectively running against U17’s.

These fantastic performances meant Heathside finished 2nd overall and guaranteed finishing 2nd place in the league behind Highgate Harriers who have won the league for the third time.  This is however a superb result for what is a young team.  That almost concludes the juniors track season although a number of U13’s are representing Middlesex on 27th.

Congratulations to all the junior athletes who have contributed to the season, officials, coaches and team managers for their efforts organising the teams but also to the parents who have helped get the athletes to the meetings and supported them from the sidelines.
