Kleynhans smashes SAL on return to action
Southern Athletics League #1, Hemel Hempstead, Saturday 16 April
Well done to everyone who competed on Saturday and a massive thank you to all athletes, coaches (Mark, Kabir, Chris and Nathan) and supporters for braving the cold weather! Thanks also to those who officiated (Mark, Kabir, Chris and John); these competitions would not take place without you!
Overall, there was an incredible team spirit, with almost every event covered in both the men’s and women’s teams by athletes chipping in for events that may have been outside their comfort zone. And we had great strength in depth, with numerous non-scorers in many events testing their skills as possible scorers for future SALs.
In the end we came third out of 4 teams. The take home message is that we beat Ryston Runners by 20 points, the very same club that stole first place in the league from us last year! And while Dacorum & Tring may have come out on top on Saturday, this can only be because they were the host team. We were neck and neck with them last year, and I have faith that we will put them in their place at the next SAL.
Congratulations to youngsters Afolabi Suboyede, Ella Johnson and Anna McAllister for their debuts in a senior competition – I hope to see them again at future competitions!
On the men’s team, we had some fantastic runners, with Heathsiders winning first or second place in almost every track event. Both Ryan McCrickerd and Tom Stephenson got PBs in the 5000m (Ryan: 16:22.5, Tom: 16:23.0), using each other to get such strong results; Ryan clearly put everything into that performance, judging from his near-collapse at the finishing line! Ivan Ross decided to undertake his own heptathlon by competing in 7 events (I am pretty sure he must have an identical brother or a time machine). And well done to Adam Kirk Smith, who won Man of the Match for his 800m performance (1:57.6)!
On the women’s team, we had two track first timers: Ula Cartwright-Finch got cracking results in the 800m (2:31.2), the 1500 m (5:13.6) and her leg of the 4x400 relay (65.9); and Lauren Hendry put her hurdle skills to the test in the 100mH and 400mH, getting respectable times in both events (100 mH: 20.7; 400 mH: 84.5). Multi-eventing appears to be Heathside’s speciality, with Mary Kehoe and Molly Harrison competing in multiple events (Molly even managed to cram some exam revision in between events).
On the field, the pole vault may have won the battle with Gokce Baydar, but she carries an impressive bump on the head to prove her efforts, and the real war will be won at the next match.
Finally, well done to Stephanie Kleynhans, who dusted off her competition spikes for the first time in a number of years, and wowed everyone with her hurdles and 200m performances, and won Woman of the Match for her long jump performance of 5.41m, smashing the current club record that has been standing for nine years by almost 20cm!
I hope to see you all at the next SAL on Sunday 22 May in Erith – COME ON YOU HEATHSIDE!
Women's Team Manager Noelle O'Regan*
