Loughborough, new club records and the Finchley 20
The highlights this week include an impressive performance in Loughborough from Heathside’s rising star, Ruairi McGonigle, new national champions and club records at the British Masters championships and super-fast times in the Finchley 20 and half marathons in North London, Surrey and elsewhere.
Intercounties XC, Loughborough, 11th March 2017
Huge congratulations are due to Ruairi McGonigle who put in an outstanding run at the Inter-counties cross-country, Loughborough, 11th March 2017, coming in first for his county (Middlesex) in the under 13 year olds race and 24th out of a field of 297. Meanwhile, Rose Garrett was 74th in the under 13 girls race and Jem O'Flaherty and Liam Garrett were 57th and 99th respectively in the under 17 boys race. Kelly Thorneycroft ran well to finish 89th in the senior women’s race.
British Masters championships, Lea Valley, 11th March 2017
There were some great performances at the British Masters championships, with several club records broken and champions made.
Adrian Essex set a new club record and became the new national champion in the M65 in 200m, finishing in 28.00, and winning the silver medal at 400m in 65:57. He also became national champion in the long jump (3.98m) and silver medallist in the triple jump.
Mark Lawrence broke the club M45 record by 2cm in the long jump, jumping 6.25m to become national champion. Meanwhile, Ivan Ross set a new PB in the 400m, finishing in 57.66 and setting a new club indoor record for M40.
20 miles: Finchley 20 and Granite 20, Sunday 12th March 2017
Sunday saw 24 Heathsiders running in the latest instalment of the club road race championships at the Finchley 20. There were super-fast times all round, leading to excitement among Heathside’s marathon predictors.
Juan Carlos Casal Perez led Heathside’s runners home in just under 2 hours (1:59:04) finishing 14th overall and 2nd M40, just under 4 minutes slower than the club record. He was followed 10 minutes later by Ash Arbhra (2:08:04) who was also first M50, followed by Daniel Johns (2:11:06) and the remaining Heathside men, with a few, such as Liam Hazelton, setting a PB. Monika Newton led the women home in 2:28:50, also coming first W35, followed shortly by Liz Drake (2:31:39) and Eilidh Wagstaff (2:36:27), with Yvette Ralston and Laura Boothman following not long after.
Henry Hamilton-Gould choose to escape the crowds and do a different 20 mile race. He reports:
“I think I ran the most scenic of all the races last Sunday. 20 miles of the Granite Way path through the heart of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. The rain came down but it didn't dampen the spirits of the 79 runners and the many hardy volunteers who braved the elements to ensure an enjoyable morning for all. The race director presented all finishers with a mug and some biscuits at the end!” He came 16th in just under 2:30.
Half marathons
Francois Barou had a great run in the Surrey half marathon on Sunday, finishing 47th of 3669 finishers, in a time of 1:20:14. Rumour has it that his top tip is not to look at your watch...
Meanwhile Chris Ballingall completed his first race running in the Heathside vest in the Silverstone half marathon. He comments: “Despite a wet start the weather cleared and even a bit of sun as I demolished my previous half PB with a time of 1:32:38”. Welcome Chris – we hope you continue enjoy running with Heathside!
Five Heathsiders ran in the North London half marathon on Sunday. The aptly-named Luke Wynne was first in for Heathside, storming home in 1:20:07, followed by Paul Jarman (1:24:47) who also came 3rd M50. Stuart Amblin and Michael Hickey followed not long after, with Mark George and Nick de Sausmarez acting as pace-makers for the 1:45 and 2:00 runners.
Two Heathsiders ran in the Bath half marathon. Paul Tonkinson reports that he’s preparing for the London marathon and started in the wrong pen, but worked through to finish in 1:25:03. Roger Hadwen completed in just under 2 hours (1:57:20).
Emilia ran in the Thames meander half marathon on Saturday, a scenic trail race starting in Kingston, going up, down and back along the Thames. Lacking mile markers, it allows Francois Barou’s top tip to be tested for anyone running Garmin-free. The flapjacks, scenery and atmosphere were also great.
Parkruns
Many Heathsiders ran in parkruns, with several doing both a parkrun and a race on the following day. Congratulations for first places finishes go to Rebecca Bunting (Folkestone, 19:59) and Emma Watson (Finsbury Park, 20:38).
