Middlesex Road relays
17.09.19 There were medals galore at the Middlesex Road relays as well as some impressive running elsewhere around the country, including at the Isle of Wight three-eventer, the Purbeck Festival, the Richmond Running Festival and the Harrow Half.
Middlesex Road Relays, Hayes, 15.09.19
Simon Baker sent in this report: "A blistering hot Sunday saw the Junior Heathsiders compete in the annual County Road Relay races at Hayes. While not quite reaching the heights of last year there were a host of excellent performances and medals secured in all the year groups we entered. The team finished with two individual golds, two individual bronzes, two silver team medals and two bronze team medals.
First up was an U11 individual race around the 1500m course with our only runner Kiara Corkin finishing 2nd overall and the first girl home to win the gold medal in a time of 5:41. This race was followed soon after by the U13 race. The Boys A team secured a hard fought silver medal. Ivor Joslin and then Benjy Bediako set up a good platform before Tynan Parker produced a strong final leg to secure 2nd place. The B team saw great performances from debutant Thomas Conley with Eric Beale and Greg Berrisford Sweet all producing solid runs. In the girls race Hattie Munday led the team off, Amara Odegoberin ran the 2nd leg, recording a time 3 minutes better than last year, followed on the last leg by Mia Rosen in only her 2nd race in Heathside colours. She produced the 3rd fastest U13G time of the day to ensure the bronze medal went to the team.
The U15 Boys A team secured bronze with Jack Davis Black running the 3rd fastest time of the day, passing on to Stan Hasson and Spike Blake. Arthur Reed and Michael Smith also ran but with an incomplete team did not place.
The U17 Men warmed up for their appearance at the South of England Relays next week with 2nd place just piped by Hillingdon who recorded the same time. Thomas Archer recorded the fastest time by an U17 with 9:13 with Oliver O’Connor and Ruairi McGonagle almost recording the same time of 9:54.
Thanks to Ruth for organising as always, Zac and Kabir for their coaching support and the parents for giving up a chunk of Sunday to get the youngsters to the race and provide vital support.

SEAA Isle of Wight Fell running series. 14-15 SeptemberThis is a two day/three race event, 3.8k on saturday morning, 12K in the afternoon and then 21K on the sunday morning. Participants can race in one, two or three of the races - bearing in mind the ascents are not for the faint hearted (235m, 443, and 487m). Mark Jefford reported back from his weekend there: “Despite the pain in the quads after three races over two days with over 1200m of ascent (and descent!), I'm already looking forward to going back next year. It's probably the only fell race where swimming in the sea between races is almost mandatory, and the timing of it being few weeks before cross county makes it excellent preparation. I see that there's still a page on the Heathside website that hints that, once upon a time, Heathside used to have a good turnout for this. Sadly, it seems to have fallen out of favour: from LHS it was just me (37th place) and Andrew Owen (44th place). I managed to scrape into 3rd in the V50 category, Andrew 6th V50.”

Richmond running festival, Richmond and Kew, 16.09.19
Filipe Cardoso reported back on the half marathon at Kew on Sunday:” I earned a new PB by finishing in 1:35:18, which was more than 4 minutes faster than my old PB at the London Landmarks Half Marathon in March. Michael Fenton finished in 1:40:18, despite having run the running festival 10k race the previous day. This bravery earned him a Goddess of Victory bonus medal for completing 2 races. Helen Mayer finished first in her age category with the time of 01:52:30. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Helen is still recovering from a foot injury.

Marianne Dosa completed the Purbeck trail marathon in an excellent time, coming home 81st participant, and 6th in age.

Janda Baik 50K Ultra, Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia
Special mention goes to Nicholas Odlin who won the Janda Baik 50km Ultra held at Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia. This is his debut over 50km - particularly impressive as his longest race before is a 1/2 marathon. His time of 5hours 29:29 placed him10 seconds ahead of the 2nd place runner. He described some of the hills as ridiculously steep.
