British Masters National Champs, Lee Valley Athletics Centre, 22-23 Feb
Moving on to Indoor Track & Field, Adrian Day reports from the British Masters Championships held at Lee Valley :
“ 650 athletes aged 35 plus entered over 1000 events at the weekend’s British Masters National Indoor Champs at Lee Valley Athletics Centre. 10 miles from the muddy cross-country shenanigans at Hampstead Heath and sandwiched between Enzo’s Cash and Carry and Thames Water’s sewage works, the Edmonton track perhaps lacks the Heath’s scenic beauty. Most would also claim the Heath is somewhat hillier – yet anyone who’s tried a block start on lane six of the indoor track could put up a decent counter-argument; lanes five and six yet again claimed a casualty – the Irish champion falling badly as body went ahead of legs on the last ‘downhill slope’ of the M65 200m.
As usual there were several stand-out performances from Heathsiders. Coach Israel showed he practices what he preaches by collecting a gold in the M35 long jump with a leap of 5.48m. This was following an earlier bronze in the 60m hurdles. Fellow coach Mark Lawrence secured a creditable bronze in the M50 long jump, clearing 5.36m.
Ivan Ross continued his rapid improvement in the M50 60m hurdles with a personal best and (yet another) club record of 10.83s. A couple of hours later he ran 30.34s in the 200m.
M70 athlete Adrian Essex added to his substantial store of rare metals (don’t tell Mr Trump) with four medals from five events; silver in the 60m and long jump, bronze in the 200m (with a season’s best of 31.37s) and the high jump. And of course he had to throw something – his fifth event was the shot.
Mike Salousti managed 29.83 in the M60 200m whilst M65 Adrian Day notched two season bests coming fourth in the 400m with a time of 66.41 and 6th in the 200m with a time of 29.09. The M65 400m was won by reigning world champion John Wright ( in 58.5s ) .
Many endurance runners already note their age-grading (for example Parkrun results show these) so it’s worth mentioning the Heathsider’s 80%+ age gradings achieved at these champs: Adrian Essex’s 60m time was graded at 85.09% whilst his 200m was 81% . Adrian Day’s 200m graded at 82.67% and the 400 at 81.08% whilst Israel’s hurdling was 82.43%.
Outdoor track and field season soon! “
