Review of 2022 - Part 1
The first part of our annual review covers January to June with medals galore for the Senior Women XC team, another fantastic County Championship and superb performances across the Club.
JANUARY 2022
Tom Aldred won the Hyde Park 10k on a lovely mild New Years Day
Leon Seale set a new overall Club Indoor 200m record at Lee Valley with Ella Burridge setting the first of many new club records by our young athletes in the U15G indoor 200m.
A very muddy Horsenden Hill hosted the Middlesex Cross Country Championships with the seniors 2nd in both Men’s and Women’s competitons. Our Young Athletes took two titles the U15 Girls and for the first time in the Club’s History the U13 Girls title. The U17M, U15B, U11B all won team silver and U13B team bronze. There were no individual titles but Issy Watkins (U15G) won silver while Oliver O’Connor (U20M), Hattie Munday (U15G) and Kiara Corkin (U13G) all won bronze.
At Lee Valley 8 Age Group Club Records were set Gabriel Edwards (U13B) 60m, 60mH and LJ, Suraya Frost (U15G) 60mH, Mia Rosen (U15G) 800m, Imani Quamina (U17W) 60mH, LJ, Martha Jolly (U15G) LJ.
The Senior Women almost secured the Met League title with their 4th win on a muddy Wormwood Scrubs course with Beth Hawling wining for the 4th consecutive time.
Milton Cooper (U15B) 300m and Max Wassermann (U13B) SP won gold at the South of England Indoor Championships. Gabriel Edwards (U13B) won a silver and bronze and Martha Jolly (U15G) improved her U15G LJ Club Record.
Leon Seale improved his club indoor 200m record at the London Indoor also setting a new U20M 60m record.
Angela Pollitzer won the British Masters indoor 3000m title in Sheffield.
The Senior Women won silver in the Southern Cross Country Championships with Beth Hawling in 3rd place the other scorers were Brogan Wallace, Evangelista Divetain and Annie Arnold.
The London Indoor Games saw Trey Corlis break the 17 year old U17M 60mH record.
FEBRUARY
Rebecca Bunting was the first women home in the Watford Half Marathon with Annabel Arnold in 3rd place.
Seyfu Jamaal won the Chingford League 5 mile race. Rory Willis won the U11 Boys race.
Rebecca Marshall finished 25th in the Pendle Way 30 mile ultra race.
Cian O’Donnell set a new indoor 200m club record at the South of England Indoor Championships.
Milton Cooper won the National Indoor U15 Boys 300m title setting a new club record time of 37.7s.
Storm Eunice mean’t the last Met League race of the season at Trent Park was cancelled and the Senior Women were confirmed Champions for the season their 4th consecutive title. The Men finished 3rd with the club 2nd in the Howard Williams overall title behind Highgate. Beth Hawling was confirmed leading Women with Brogan Wallace 3rd. The Clubs Young Athletes also finished 2nd overall with the U11 Boys, U13 Girls and Junior Women all in 2nd place.
The climax of the Cross Country Season saw the Senior Women finish 3rd in the National Cross Country Championships in Hampstead Heath. Scorers were Beth Hawling (8th), Brogan Wallace (46th), Rebecca Bunting (55th) and Josie Hinton (57th). Seyfu Jamaal was our first Senior man home with the team finishing 17th. The U15 Girls finished a remarkable 10th place in their race.
Leon Seale featured at the National Indoor Championships in Birmingham in the mens 200m.
Adrian Essex won silver and bronze at the European Masters Indoor Championships in Braga Portugal.
MARCH
Tom Aldred won the Mornington Chasers Regent Park 10k with Christopher Gracie 2nd and Andrew Barnes 3rd.
Pete Crockford won the V60M Chingford League medal with Rory Wills the 1st U11 Boy.
Adrian Essex won 6 golds at the British Masters Indoor Championships with Asha Osei and Mark Lawrence also winning golds.
The last North West London Young Cross Country League race was also cancelled with the club overall champions. Age Group winners were Lila Blustin (U13G) and Hattie Munday (U15G)
11 Heathsiders represented Middlesex at the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
The Club won 16 medals at the Middlesex Indoor Championships with 7 new club records set. Milton Cooper (U15B) 200m and 300m, Martha Jolly (U15G) LJ, Trey Corlis (U17M) 60mH and Ella Burridge (U15G) 300m were all crowned County Champions. Vladimir Woodham-Smith set a new senior club record in the 400m.
Rebecca Bunting was 1st woman home in the Brentwood half marathon.
Annabel Arnold was 2nd woman in the Victoria Park Open 5 mile race with Seyfu Jamaal 4th in the mens race and Tom Aldred the 1st V40 in a new club record.
4 Young Heathsiders took part in the National Schools with Izzy Watkins 48th in the Intermediate Girls race.
The SEAA Road relays in Milton Keynes saw the senior women finish 9th and senior men 19th place.
APRIL
Rebecca Bunting broke her PB by 5 minutes in the Manchester Marathon and qualified for the GB 50km team.
Evangelista Divetain set a new club record of 35.45 in the French 10km Championships in Boulogne.
Milton Cooper got to run a 300m race with Dina Asha Smith at the LICC meeting at Lee Valley setting a new U15B club 300m record . Ella Burridge set new U15G 200m and 300m records as did Trey Corlis and Imani Quamina in their respective sprint hurdle races.
Milli Bridgeman-Athanasatos and Elkie Baker both set new U15G records in the triple jump and discus at an open meeting in Harrow. At Woodford James Hamblin set a new club Hammer record by 77cm with 58.71m he improved this to 60.71m later in the month.
Steve Pennington set a new V50 Club Record at the Boston Marathon.
Michael Stocks set a new V50 British Record while running the Centurion Track 100 mile race at Bedford.
The Club took part in the Upper YDL for the first time as part of a composite team with Highhgate Harriers and Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets with Trey Corlis setting a new U17m 110m record. Hattie Munday also set a new U17W 800m record.
MAY
Lots of Seniors mixed it with Mo Farah and Elise McColgan at the Vitality 10km in Westminster. Chris Holmes and Rebecca Bunting were first seniors home Rebecca leading the women to 3rd place in the British 10k Road Championships.
Tom Aldred was first at the YMCA 10k with Catrin Taylor first women.
The Young Athletes commenced their defence of the MYAL title by winning every age group with 14 event wins , 4 new championship bests and eight new club records.
The Middlesex County Championships, celebrating their 100th year, saw the club’s athletes secure 15 golds, 14 silver medals and 9 Bronze. Gabriel Edwards set a new Championship best in the U13B 75mH with 4 new club records set.
The Vets team were successful in their first meeting with the women first and men in 2nd place.
3 Heathsiders took part in the Night of the 10000m PB’s at Parlaiment Hill with George Gurney and James Hurrell both setting PB’s.
Michael Kennedy was 3rd in the Goring Gap Half Marathon while Tom Aldred was 3rd in the Civil Service 10k Championships.
The club successfully hosted the 2nd MYAL meeting of the season. Again the club won overall winning all but one age group. There were 22 event wins, 4 new club records and 2 championship bests.
The seniors also were in League action with the SAL meeting at Hemel Hempstead finishing in 3rd place. There were 11 event wins, with James Hamblin setting a new club hammer record.
George Gurney was 6th in the Hackney Half Marathon with Rebecca Bunting the first woman.
Trey Corlis and Imani Quamina both set new club records in the sprint hurdles in the UYDL at Erith.
Brogan Wallace ran the fastest 1500m by a women at the BMC meeting in Eltham.
JUNE
Cian O’Donnell set a new club 100m record (10.65s) while running for Glasgow Jaguars in the National League,
Brogan Wallace set a new club 3000m record (9:45.14) at the BMC event at Crownpoint. She then broke the club’s 1500m record (4:28.87) and the BMC Grand Prix in Watford.
Tony Killilea was 1st V55 at the International Runners Decathlon in Potsdam
The 2nd SAL meeting was at Finsbury Park with the club winning overall with an almost clean sweep of the SM track events.
Rebecca Bunting won the Exmoor Coastal Trail Marathon in a new course record of 3:47.13.
Karina Kaufmann was crowned world V40 sprint duathlon champion in Targo Mures, Romania.
Harry Kleiman was in the winning team at the man v horse race in Wales.
Cian O’Donnell was crowned Southern 100m Champion in a new club record time of 10.46s, while Brogan Wallace won the 1500m setting a new club record of 4:26.04 while James Hamblin won the Hammer title.
The Club Handicap race returned to the leafy surrounds of Highgate Woods. Yann Sevestre won the mens race and Annie Arnold the womans.
Sam Brown (JB 300m) and Thomas Wasserman (IB 100mH) both won Middlesex Schools titles. The London Schools Championships in Battersea saw Trey Corlis, Martha Jolly, Imani Quamina and Montana Dennis all win gold. Martha set a new U15G Long Jump record with 5.13m.
Cian O’Donnell competed at the Muller UK Athletics Championships in Manchester.
The Club held the first part of it’s Club Championships.
The third MYAL meeting saw another overall win with 4 age group wins. There were 14 age group wins, with 2 league bests and one club record with Izzy Watkins (U17W) running 2:15.46 in the 800m.
Sarah Swinhoe and Francois Barou took part in the Ironman race in Nice.
Julie Pickering ran the South Downs Way 100, to become only the second Heathside woman ever to complete a 100 mile race.
