Heathsiders were out and about all over the country on a blustery weekend, with the main event for the club (in terms of numbers participating) being the Watford Half where some 40 members took part. A small contingent of brave youngsters also braved the unfavourable weather conditions to represent the club at the NW London Young Athlete’s XC League meeting at Harrow
Where available, Chip Times and positions are given.
NW London Young Athletes' Cross Country League (Harrow, Saturday 6th February)
Elliott Reed reports: “At the NWL YA meeting in Harrow this weekend, there were a total of five young athletes competing for London Heathside. A huge congratulations goes out of to Mathilda Heath, sisters Inshi and Kate Nyrako, Hattie Munday, and Arthur Reed for turning up to run in the wind, rain and boggy mud! Luke Grays also deserves a special mention for turning up and starting his race, despite a bad cold, which led the coaches to pull him out before the end to avoid further detriment to his health.
Most impressive performance of the day was in the U13 2000m Girls race. Mathilda Heath finished third overall in a time of 9.43 - a fantastic result and make sure you heap lots of praise on this future talent. She ran a great race - as did Kate Nyrako, who ran in the same race, and finished 20th. There were two Heathside runners competing in the 32-strong U11 1200m Girls Race. Hattie Munday, who is still only 9 years old, finished in 15th place in 7.37. With two more years to race in this U11 age group, we can expect great things to come for Hattie. Not far behind at all was Inshi Nyarko who finished in 24th place. Lastly, the only Heathside young gent to run today was regular Arthur Reed who finished 16th in the U11 Boys race.
Well done to all, and we hope to see you - plus many more - at the final Met League fixture at Ally Pally next Saturday!”

The Pilgrim Challenge 2016 (Sealskinz Ultra Race Series ) (Sands, 6-7 February)
David Hellard writes: “I ran the ‘Pilgrims Challenge’ - 66 miles over two days on the North Downs Way. It was long… how long? Too long! Came second. The weather was surprisingly good. Windy up on the ridges, but the rain mainly held off. There was thick, glue-like mud throughout though. Thankfully the pitstops had everything from pretzels to chorizo, although I rarely stopped for anything more than water. Definitely a race to put on your list, as you can do just one day if you fancy your first ultra without taking on too much.”

Watford Half (Sunday 7th February)
Nick Haward reports: “Particularly pleased with my time - only 3m26s off my PB. All down to those Heathside training sessions and the great atmosphere in the club. Much appreciated!”
Andy Barnes led the Heathside contingent, with Rachel Newstead Heathside’s leading lady. Further down the rankings there must’ve been some exciting sprint finishes taking place, as, for example, 32 places but only 24 seconds separated Heathsiders Liam Hazelton, James Felstead, Louisa Pointon, John Mullee, Stuart Amblin and James Dark around the 1h39m mark!
