SAL Heathside heroes show future promise!

Southern Athletics League

On Saturday, a slightly depleted squad (due to various injuries, exams, holidays and marathons) of hardy Heathsiders headed to Ipswich on an unusually sunny and pleasant mid-April afternoon. What we lacked in numbers, we more than made up for in spirit; despite some late withdrawals, we covered every single event with an A and B scorer. And although we finished 4th by the smallest of margins, to come so close to 2nd while missing some key athletes is a positive sign. Moreover, we saw some very promising debut performances, including Giulia Ariete breaking a 16-year-standing club record for W35 in the high hurdles by 2 whole seconds with a time of 19.4 (sorry, Rachel Weston, for bumping you out of the record), and Anna McAllister winning the 400m hurdles B race, having learnt hurdles the Thursday before the match (clearly there is some excellent hurdles coaching at this club!).

Other very noteworthy performances include Luke Gray's 400m PB in 51.0 (a sub 50 is well within reach this season), and Andrew Brooker winning the 5000m race by over a minute in 15:25. Emmanuel Nwaobodo and Mark Lawrence won the A and B string shot despite neither of them specialising in or even training for the event (note: Mark is still recovering from a ruptured Achilles and also did a credible long jump and discus). On the women’s team, the 4x400m relay smashed it, with a winning combination of Conlon siblings + European talent (Italian import Elena Susana and Irish/German hybrid Noelle O’Regan). Pole vault was also in the bag with Gokce Baydar and Genevieve Weston winning the A and B string, respectively (2.30m and 1.10m). And Genevieve Weston and Chiara Borg literally stepped up in the steeplechase, taking 2nd place in A and B string.

As captains, we were massively impressed by the enthusiasm from the team to make sure all events were covered, with multiple athletes participating in numerous events, including disciplines far outside their traditional comfort zone. Especially big thanks to Ivan "I can do anything except the steeplechase" Ross, who not only did PV, javelin, 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, but also …. steeplechase! Nathan Cyrus competed in TJ, 110m hurdles, 4x100m relay and javelin. Emmanuel did LJ, TJ, shot, and 4x100m relay. David Fallon was a great hand, competing in 400m, 1500m, 4x400m relay and HJ. And Tom Fancett competed in 800m, 1500m, HJ and 4x400m relay despite recently returning from injury. Adrian Essex was another great team player, offering to fill any remaining gaps and doing the 400m hurdles, hammer and PV. Newcomer Pauline Le Tacon took on 100m, LJ, TJ and 4x100m; Giulia Ariete competed in 100m hurdles, LJ, TJ and 4x100m. And just because we’re Heathside and we have athletes to spare, we had numerous 100m, 200m, 1500m and shot non-scorers, and even a 4x100m non-scoring women’s relay team.

A huge thanks to Jonathan Litchfield and his team of incredible helpers: Peter Holland, Dave Walton, Sebouh Takvorian, Justyna Senderowicz, Claudia Backhaus, Jessica Vinluan, Tom Godec, Richard Macaulay, Tom Fancett, John Flahive, Kim Butler, David Fallon and Zac. Lovely to see Pete Holland again, who has relocated to Ipswich, but remains a Heathsider at heart. And finally, thank you to the coaches, who give up countless hours every week to help us athletes compete and improve.

Victoria Park Open 5 Miles 14th April 2018

About 11 Heathsiders turned up at busy Victoria Park on a warm Saturday for the Victoria Park Open 5 mile race. Despite the heat and having to dodge pedestrians, dogs and children on bikes and scooters, there were some great performances. Tom won! Leigh was the 3rd woman, Cathy posted a great time, and we saw Jane return to Heathside colours. I was pleased to run a 3-second PB and the Heathside women's team came second. All in all, not a bad afternoon, and I'm sure I'm missing out some other strong performances. This is an inexpensive, fast race that's worth entering if you don't mind the slightly awkward start time of 2:30pm: Just pretend it's cross country!

Brighton 10K 15th April 2018

Emilia Vynnvcky did the Brighton 10K on Sunday. She writes: ‘it was a nice well-organised race, held just before the marathon started and was not too crowded despite having over 3500 runners. The initial downhill helped me to get my best 10K time for 12 years (43:22), making up for for any remaining disappointment after I'd decided not to do the full marathon following an ankle injury in February.’

Parkruns

There were some impressive park run results, to shout out a few from Rebecca Bunting at Worthing completing in 18.19, first woman in, 6th place overall. Josie Hinton at Hackney Marshes in 18.26, first woman in and 12th overall. Willian Grifiths at Chipping Sodbury was 2nd overall in 17:48.
