SAL, Midnight Sun Half, Triffic Trail, Ranelagh 10K, BMAF Pentathlon champs, an Audax
The third SAL of the season occupied a largish proportion of the club on Saturday, with all the excitements, triumphs and disasters fully reported on. There were also plenty of other activies partaken of over this weekend (and a few from last weekend) with the usual wide range of distances and disciplines including a far flung half marathon, a pentathlon, various 10ks, a VERY long cycle ride, orienteering, two aquathons and two triathlons.(UPDATED)
3rd SAL, Colchester, 20.02.15
Big Heathside excitement over the weekend was the the third SAL event, held in Colchester on Saturday. Huge thanks to Dan for perfectly summing up the day here, plus kindly, painstakingly extracting all the results (see end of report for full list):
"Team Heathside fell agonisingly short of a third consecutive SAL victory, but remain well on course for promotion. Honours on the day went to the home team, Colchester and Tendring, who scored 322 points to our 318.5, with the other teams well beaten. You can't tell me that's not a nailbiter.
Looking back across the results, a huge thanks and well done to everyone who made the journey and helped us run the home team so close. Particular congratulations are due to those who've been lending a hand with organising and turning the team from SALso-rans (aha, ah) into terminators of track and field. After three fixtures, we're right up there in our division and you'd have to be some sort of a madman to bet against us getting a well deserved promotion.
A small and by-no-means exhaustive highlights list:
• A giant leap for Jess V, who decided to have a crack at jumping the 400m hurdles (thus far she's been hoovering up points by simply stepping over the wretched things). Despite running easily her fastest time to date, she was denied a PB as the time for the race wasn't recorded for some reason.
• An impressive array of jumping techniques from AKS in the men's steeplechase, ranging from 'the heelclicker' to 'the karate kid'. In contrast, we had a couple of 'non-jump' techniques at the water hazard with Rich Macaulay's 'wade in' only marginally more impressive than Jacob Phillips's 'fall in'.
• James Wooldridge being involved in a couple of hair-raising sprint finishes with his own clubmates, holding off a PB-busting Rich in the 800m and Tom Fancett in the 1500.
• Bergit and Laura managing to get us a haul of 10 points from the women's pole vault. Top vaulting!
• Glorious sunshine throughout. Oh, wait - it chucked it down. The ladies' steeplechase was especially brutal, so huge respect to Rebecca B and Jess for effectively clearing over 40 water jumps between them.
Despite the individual accomplishments, our points tally was mainly built on a core of versatile / overworked people with Ivan taking on six scoring events, Helene and Noele five, and Adrian and Rich four each.
Heartbreaking moment of the day goes to Ivan, who had to run from the pole vault (where he was doing brilliantly) to the 110 hurdles where the starter was anxious to get us underway. After a promising start, Heathside's very own Daley Thompson clattered the third barrier from home and ran into the second last. Despite clearly being in a very bad way, he somehow picked himself up and cleared the last hurdle, only to suffer the indignity of a disqualification before being carted off to hospital.
Happily, Ivan reports no breaks or fractures. However, we could certainly do with spreading the load a bit more in our remaining fixtures (not least because Ivan's unlikely to be able to fit his big, swollen ankle into a pair of track spikes for some time).
You can be part of the Heathside summer of track and field glory! Our next fixture is 4 July at Parliament Hill. There's a huge range of events to choose from, it's a very accessible standard, and even if you don't fancy taking on the steeplechase (cluck, cluck, cluck), you could earn us valuable league points just by helping officiate one of the events. Look forward to seeing lots of you there!"
Midnight Sun Half Marathon in Tromsø, Norway 20/21.10.15
Jane ran a brilliant PB in the Tromsø Midnight Sun Half Marathon in a time of 1.32.23, knocking 6 minutes off her previous time. She completely loved the run and wrote this about it: "I did the midnight sun half marathon in Tromsø, Norway on Saturday night. I came 6th lady in 1.32.23 and also won a large vase for coming first in my age group. It was brilliant x100, I loved it. It started at 10.30pm so finishes just after midnight in broad sunlight. It's so weird! But brilliant. You run along the Arctic coast with amazing views of the snow covered mountains. Can I just say again that I loved it? “ ...... I think she loved it.
Ranelagh Harriers Richmond 10K, Richmond, 21.06.15
Rebecca Taylor was the only Heathsider who ran the Ranelagh Harriers 10km in Richmond this Sunday 21 June – and had this to say about it: ”Conditions were clear and cool and the flat fast course attracted plenty of good runners, 140 of whom (of the 639 who finished) posted sub 40 minute times. I wasn't in top form myself, and only managed 53:29, quite a bit slower than my PB. Not sure why more Heathsiders didn't make it over to Richmond as the race surely offers a good opportunity to do a PB."
BMAF Pentathlon Championships, Horspath Oxford 21.06.15
Adrian Essex had a satisfying Sunday by adding another British championship to the two he currently holds by winning the 2015 outdoor pentathlon at Horspath on Sunday 21st June. He modestly added:”Not too tricky when all the other silly old coots don't bother turning up”.His full results are given below.
Finsbury Park orienteering Parkrace (Short Course - 2.6km), 18.06.15
Luka and Brian decided to test out their orienteering skills in Finsbury Park in one of the Summer Parkrace series (www.parkrace.org).Luka reported back "101 people competed in the Long Course (4.6km) while we managed a one-two on the Short Course (2.6km) among ...ahem...twelve finishers. You've guessed correctly that we will be doing the Long Course next time as it is also suitable for absolute beginners. Parkrace is a series of orienteering events in various London parks in Tuesdays and Thursday's throughout the Summer. The next race is Thursday 25 June in Victoria park."
Buzzard – 600k Audax 20/21.06.15
Samuel Thompson took part in the Buzzard Audax and wrote this report: “I thought I'd sent a brief report of my weekend's, erm, cycling excursion taking part in The Buzzard - a 600km Audax from Leighton Buzzard to Exeter and back, but calling it a 'race' would be wildly inaccurate and possibly offend the Audax community! The route included controls at Pangbourne, Chandler's Ford, Salisbury, Sherbourne, Exeter, Wells, Cirencester and Brackley. We set off at 7:00am on Saturday morning and had 40 hours to return within the time limit. As you may expect, it's difficult to compress 380 miles of cycling into a brief report but here goes: Fast flat start, eat, headwind, eat, big long hills to Exeter, eat, ride through night, eat, more big long hills, eat, sunrise, eat, big long hill out of Bath, eat, annoyingly lumpy Cotswolds, eat, hang on, finish. Eat a lot. Sleep.I know I said it wasn't a race but I think I was the 4th person to finish the route (out of maybe 30-50) in just under 31 hours, 26 of which were spent on the move. Most other people took a break to sleep though”.
Triffic Trail, Trent Park, 21.06.15
10 Heathsiders took part in the ever popular Trent Park Triffic Trail which covered some of the usual cross country routes along the way, but mostly consisted of an "undulating" trail run along the paths and byways around the park. Everyone agreed it was a really enjoyable and scenic race despite having some nasty never-ending hills. Rachel led the group home coming in second woman. Watermelon slices were very welcome at the end, as were the hefty goody bag and t-shirt.
Triathlons
Sergio di Noto sent in a late result from last weekend, where he took part in his second triathlon – a half ironman – the Cotswold 113. His target was to finish it in under 5 hours, so he was very pleased to complete in 4 hours 46 coming in 83rd. Simon Bailey also sent in a late result from last weekend, having done a very respectable time - coming in 186th out of 291 in the Windsor triathlon.
Aquathons
Sandra Buckton took part in two aquathons during the week (I'm not sure of the exact dates) and reported back:" Both events are part of a series and are highly recommended, especially for those whose run is stronger than their swim. You get to practice a weaker discipline and the hardest part of transition (taking off wetsuit) before rewarding yourself with a run where you can catch the fast swimmer/slow runners!"
Hull 10K 14.06.15
Late results from Cathy Jeremiah from last week. She had a super speedy run getting her a PB and 2nd Woman when she ran the Hull 10K on 14th June. She had this to say: “It's the second year I've run it and it didn't disappoint, well except for the rain and wind, but that was compensated for by the hugely supportive crowd around the course. I was coming fourth for most of the race although I'd been gaining on third lady consistently and when I got close enough to overtake her I realized second lady was just in front! So much to both mine and my family's surprise I came running down the home straight in second place! Great race if a bit twisty - club champs contender next year?! My time was 38:22 which is a pb so really pleased!”

Parkruns
There was an interesting scattering of Parkruns including such far flung destinations as Lanhydrock and Cabinteely. Of note, Gareth Marshall was 1st at Pymmes Park in a time of 18.19 (a PB at least for parkruns) and Jackie Wastell 1st woman at Lanhydrock in 24.10. Check out the full results here.
