Serpie New Year's Day 10k, Middlesex XC champs
Nine Heathsiders got their 2012 racing season off to a swift start by taking part in the Serpentine New Year’s Day 10k, with Gavin in particular having a great run, while our U15 boys and U17 girls brought home two team medals from the Middlesex cross-country champs on Saturday.
There may have been plenty more Heathsiders out racing since the start of the year, but I’m afraid that for the purpose of this report I will focus on the New Year’s Day 10k and the cross-country champs. Gavin ran a mighty fine time (according to Power of 10 his fastest 10k time since 2007?) to come in the top 20 and easily scoop another V50 victory, while Leigh ran well to come in the top five senior ladies and Caroline was second woman V50.
The cross-country season resumed last Saturday with the Middlesex Champs, held in the uninspiring location that is Wormwood Scrubs (sorry). Conditions would have been ideal had it not been for a fairly stubborn wind blowing over the exposed course, as otherwise the sun was out and there wasn’t much mud to contend with. Turnout was low on the senior women front, but we still managed a decent fourth place with all of us having pretty solid runs. Sarah was hot on my heels to give us both a top 10 finish with Claire and Jackie the others to score. Our senior men turned out in much geater number, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough to win the 12 to score category as Serpentine beat us to that one. George, Martin, Alex, Michael, Paul and new member M’hamed were the six to score, giving us sixth place, with all of them seeming to be running well. I didn’t see all of the finishes but a special mention to John for an impressive sprint finish to win a tussle with a U23 lad.
Our most successful performances came from our young athletes, with the U15 boys, led by James in 10th and followed by Max and a below par Johnny (virus), narrowly winning bronze. A third place team result for our U17 girls was a nice surprise, what with Yanna out of action on account of a bad cold – let’s get those young ladies out again (Jade and Dominic’s two daughters, Kathleen and Ellen).
Results as follows (again, sorry for missing out any results – I realise I haven’t included parkruns)
