Seyfu breaks club 5,000 & half-marathon record
Last weekend was packed with activity for Heathsiders and, once again, it is our Seyfu Jamaal who takes top spot. First, he broke the club 5,000m record in a time of 13:58; then, four days later, he broke the club half marathon record at the Big Half in a time of 1:03:34. Meanwhile Noelle O’Regan won gold for Ireland in the V35 400m in the British Masters’ Athletics championships in a time of 63.93, a second ahead of the second placed athlete.
Big Half, London, Sunday September 3 2023
Seyfu Jamaal broke the club record and ran a new half marathon PB time of 1:03:34 in Sunday’s Big Half. What made it even more impressive was that it was a hot and humid day and the bridge-filled course is not as fast as several others. Seyfu came first in the open race (non-elites).
Ben Norris was the second Heathsdier in a time of 1:09:51. V40 Andy Barnes was the third of the 46 Heathsider’s who completed the race, in a time of 1:10:51, followed by Kader Seyed in 1:11:16, James Hurrell (1:11:25), V40 Sion Lewis (1:13:48) and Conor Brown and Daryn Hillson, both of whom came in at 1:15:33. Ed Boden was next – and our first V50 – in 1:16:38. Another impressive performance came from V55 Rob Shulman, who at 58, came in at 1:22:42. Rob and Ed used this as a starter pack for their forthcoming ultra in the Alps.
Our first woman was Yen Vo in a time of 1:35:59 followed by Lucy Aitchison in 1:39.16, Emily Eldred in 1:42.08 and Sonia Connor in 1:45.07.

Hampstead ‘Pondathon’, Hampstead Heath, Sunday September 3
Hannah Yip reports that fourteen Heathsiders took part in the 24th Hampstead Heath Duathlon, otherwise known as the 'Pondathon' (or 'Pondathlon'), an event which involves swims of approximately 930m (three lengths of the lido and one lap each of the Highgate Men's, Kenwood Ladies, and Mixed Ponds), plus 3.35 miles of running in between each pond. Owing to the ongoing building works, the race finished this year in the field behind the lido as opposed to the track at Parliament Hill. Conditions were ideal; the water was pleasantly cooling in between the runs.
‘Sergio, Lenny, and Tanya started in the second wave, but that didn't stop them cruising past four of us in the first wave. (Lenny and I left the Mixed Ponds together for the final run – I didn't stand a chance.) Katie, fresh from the 2023 Europe Aquathlon Championships in Belgium, was our second woman, managing to beat Filipe who was sent the wrong way by one of the marshals. Patrick got a 7-minute PB, while I got a PW, having rather neglected my swimming training of late. Sadly no buffet this year, plus a price hike in registration – a sign of the times.’
