Southern Athletics League Fixture #4 at Ashford

Southern Athletics League Division 2E, Ashford, Kent, 13 Jul 2019

Heathside come out in force for fourth SAL match, and narrowly finished 3rd in the fixture

- report below from Noelle O'Regan

"Over 30+ Heathsiders enjoyed a summer day in Kent for the penultimate SAL fixture in Ashford on Saturday 13 July, where we faced top of the table Eastbourne, host club Ashford and Cambridge & Coleridge.

Biggest thanks, first and foremost, to all who helped officiate and volunteer: Chris Dissanayake (timekeeping), Jerry Odlin (track judging), plus field team extraordinaire Jacob Howe, Tony Killilea, Kabir Kemp, Chris Vincent, Claudia Backhaus, Seb Takvorian, Rebecca Piggott, Kimon Doulis and Kim Butler.

We excelled on the track, winning the A and B 400, 800, 5000 and steeplechase races for the women and the 400, 1500 and steeplechase races for the men. We absolutely smashed it in the mixed 4x400m relays, winning the A string by 3 seconds and the B string by 44 seconds.

However, the quality that Ashford and Eastbourne had in the field events was a little too much – in the end, we finished 3rd (albeit less than 10 points behind Ashford and only 20 behind Eastbourne – despite being over 100 points ahead of Cambridge)!

Performance of the day goes to Charles Hardy, who, despite also competing in the inter counties championships the following day, ran a 3000 steeplechase PB in a breath-taking 9:38, which qualifies him to enter the English championships later this summer. Big shout outs also to Joel Hawes and Seyfu Jamaal for doing multiple events at the SAL despite competing in the inter counties on Sunday (Seyfu’s 1500m victory by over 30 seconds at the SAL was a particular highlight).

Notable performances on the women’s team included the teenage steeplechase duo Mimi Blake and Rose Garrett, both of whom stepped in last minute to take on – and win – this terrifying race (alongside competing in a host of other events)!

Speaking of teenage talent, the quality and quantity of junior and emerging senior athletes who competed in, and won, multiple events, made Heathside proud. This included Deji Agbede and Ruairi McGonagle winning the men’s A and B 400m, Ella Conlon winning her first ever 400m hurdles race, Anna McAllister winning the high jump B string and Erin Heritage competing in 100 hurdles, shot put and hammer (throwing a much heavier weight than usual for a 15 year old!).

Finally, the most exciting race of the day was between two non-scoring athletes, the master Nathan Cyrus and his student Ajarni Hinds, in a Heathside head-to-head 400m showdown.Everyone thought that Nathan had it in the bag; however, Ajarni stuck close behind and crossed the finish line 5m ahead, taking home the gold, as the lactic sniper took out Nathan in a classic attack. Nathan lived to tell the tale and I’m sure will be back for revenge.

The last fixture this season is Saturday 17th August at Woodford. We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible!"
