World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships,Gainsville Florida, 29.03.25
Adrian Day sent in this report: “Adrian Essex and I crossed the Atlantic last week to compete at the World Masters Athletics Champs in (mainly) sunny north Florida. Despite the around 28 degrees heat these were the World Indoor Champs - actually welcome given the humidity and the storms on Sunday. We were joined by over 3000 athletes from 99 countries at a well-organised event in Gainesville (home of University of Florida and the ‘Gators American football team). Adrian Essex achieved an impressive top ten in the world in the pentathlon, the 200m and the 400m. He also ran the 4 x 200m as the only sprinter, having assembled a scratch team of ‘mixed abilities’. Not possessing my namesake’s versatility, I focussed on the sprints, using the 60m heats solely to acclimatise to the call room process and loud arena. I also managed to finish in the top ten in the world in my age group in the 200m and 400m with seasons’ bests (thanks to Israel’s excellent coaching and the encouragement from his masters training group); in both events I came second in my semi-finals, but the limitations of a 6 lane indoor track meant I missed out on the finals.
The highlight for me came on the last day when I joined three other GB 65+ sprinters to win my first world gold in the 4 x 200m. We faced a strong home team but won in 1.51.80. I had lots of vocal encouragement from my partner Wendy who seemed to take particular delight in shouting loudly for her fellow Canadians throughout the week - they would’ve heard her in Mar-a-Lago (the US athletes were very welcoming to all!).
Team GB came second in the overall medals table to the US (who had over 1000 competitors) and ahead of arch competitors such as Germany, Spain, France and Australia.
