Take your pick: Half-marathons, XC relays, indoors and more
This latest batch of results goes back to the end of February, and provides good news in the form of four Heathside men making the top 20 in the Milton Keynes half, a win for our hastily cobbled-together women’s team in the Horsenden Hill cross-country relays, and PBs from Jo and Rob.
The Horsenden Hill cross-country relays kind of crept up on us, having been postponed from their usual early autumn slot to after the Nationals and turnout consequently suffering. We did manage to put together a women’s and men’s team, however, so many thanks to all those involved in getting that organised, and to John and George for running two legs so that the men could field a “full” team. Wanda, who turned out for Heathside on the track last summer and is a nifty runner to say the least, ran the opening leg in the fastest time of the day, with Iva crossing the line in second place on her leg after Fiona Kennedy (ESM) ran the fastest Vet’s time (14:19). Claire, who turned out despite running a half the next day, overhauled ESM’s Patricia Thomas shortly before the main hill and was just too good to be caught, so a comfortable win in the end. Thanks to Kabir for the colour on this. Steve’s opening leg of 11:44 was among the faster times on the day, with only 11:15 from Highgate’s Ryan McKinley really standing out as much swifter times. George ran the second and sixth leg, and John the third and fifth, with Dom taking over the fourth leg. Conditions were firm underfoot and the weather mild. Our young athletes took part in the final cross-country fixture of the North West Young Athletes League, also held at Perivale on the same day of the relays, but results were not yet available.
Sunday proved to be a busy day for Heathsiders, with a bunch of half marathons to choose from, the Festival of Running 5k race in Finsbury Park that Heathside helped organise, the Middlesex Indoor Champs, and more. Plenty of Heathsiders turned out for the Finsbury Park race, with Steve finishing second, and Iva, Jackie and Elspeth claiming first through third on the women’s side (please see below for a note from Jerry on the event). Elswhere, four of our men finished in the top 20 of the Milton Keynes half marathon, Jo ran a PB in the Berkhamsted half, and Rob ran a PB in the last of the Mornington Chasers’ Regents Park 10k Winter Series. It’s probably worth putting these performances into the context of what was some pretty horrendous weather that day, too. Going further back somewhat two relatively new members of the club, Gavin and Alice Parish, ran their first race of this distance with excellent results at Roding Valley on 26 February.
From Jerry, on the Finsbury Park Festival of Running 5km, which was held in aid of Bower Cancer Charities and sponsored by Tottenham Hotspur Foundation:
“The race and organisation of it were held in horrendous conditions which I am sure affected the numbers running. Unfortunately we had some problems in publicising this event, too boring to mention here, which also affected the numbers entering. The mini-marathon trials for Hackney, Islington , City of London and Camden were also held at this event with some 200 competitors and I am sure that everyone involved in those races thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would like to thank all those involved in marshalling, timekeeping results etc etc for their unstinting help.”
The 2012 club champs tables are now up to date after the 2 races of this year, with Ken Heney and Iva Raykov heading the tables. The next race in the champs is the Crouch End 10k - entries are now open so please get booking!
