Thames Meander, Euro Masters and Down Under

We had various Heathsiders in action this week at the Thames Meander, a trail race with full and half marathon options.

"Myself and William took part in the half and we both did pretty well," beams Jim C. "I had a 1st in the old codgers category/11th overall, while William ran a storming PB." Jim goes on to tarnish the veneer of respectability by mentioning that he took a booting off his "mate" from Mornington Chasers, but I hardly think we need to dwell on that.

Meanwhile, Michelle was 4th lady in the full marathon and Andy had a good finish, thanks to some sort of dubious pacing strategy. "I was using it as a training run for Amsterdam in October and something that might be of interest to people is the fact that I used a run/walk strategy of run 1mile / walk 1min, 26 times and still managed to finish 11th.

"A friend of mine said it was cheating but I call it good strategy (Think of it as an extreme intervals session)." Nice try Andy, but round here we don't call intervals sessions extreme until you're well into your fifth hour.

Other news

  • Ursula sends us a tear-stained missive from Australia, proclaiming that she misses Heathside (and also that she was 4th lady in her last 10k, first in age group).

  • Closer to home, Tony Killilea scuttled to glorious 8th in the European Masters Champs in what I can only imagine must have been a packed Ataturk Stadium in Izmir, Turkey.

  • Helene Kehoe is our long-distance sprinter of the week, after legging it for a total of almost a kilometre at various track and field meets (results below).

  • In slightly older (or more elderly) news, Neil Davies reports some good results in the M65 category at the British Masters' Champs a few weeks back: 4th in the 1500m and bronzed glory in the 800, along with some wry observations about his depressingly sprightly opponents ("These old buggers are fast.")
