The not the Crouch End 10K, the SAL and the Hackney Half
21.05.19 There were three big events this week for the club – Crouch End 10K (plus 250m) and Fun Runs, the SAL and the Hackney Half. The Crouch End event had the largest number of Heathsiders in attendance, with many of them winning various trophies including first male and female. The SAL despite having a smallish turnout did well and results at the Hackney Half were impressive.
Crouch End 10K, Priory Park, 1905.19
This local event always attracts a large Heathside turnout and this year (it’s 29th) was no exception. Due to roadworks the 10K was extended by 250 metres. 67 Heathsiders took part in the 10k (and 250 metres) with Tom Aldred and Rebecca Piggot coming first male and female runners, and Martin Potter first MV50 and Caroline White 1st FV60. This event wouldn’t be possible without the huge amount of work put in by volunteers, and the marshals – so massive thanks to everyone that helped at this event and made it such an enjoyable event.
YMCA Crouch End Fun Run, Priory Park,19.05.19
Simon Baker reported back on this race: Some great runs from the juniors in the Crouch End Fun runs around Priory Park with wins for Jack Davis-Black and Hattie Munday in the Over 12 Race. The continued large fields for this demonstrating the huge appetite for running by youngsters in our part of North London.
Southern Athletics League (SAL), Kings Lynn, 18.05.19
Thanks to Noelle for this report:
The small but mighty team that did Heathside proud at King’s Lynn SAL
It took almost 3 hours to get there, it rained the entire day, and we came third. On the face of it, you’re probably thinking the entire trip wasn’t worth it. But when you go into the detail, you’ll see we had some pretty decent individual results. And all from a tiny but mighty kick ass team, with only 11 women and 16 men to fill 76 events (to cover both A and B string). You’ll see the quality of our Heathside athletes from the results below – I really hope this will inspire you all to come along to the next one (15th June)!!
We won or came 2nd across a huge number of events. In the women’s team, we won A and B for 100m and 200m (Elly Ball, Noëlle O’Regan), 800m (Rosa Serafini, Jenny Wing) and the 4x100 (Naomi Conlon, Jenny Wing, Noëlle O’Regan, Elly Ball). We got second place A and B for 400m (Rosa Serafini, Naomi Conlon) and 1500m (Rose Garrett, Jessica Vinluan).
In the men’s team, Cian O’Donnell and Leon Seale won the 200m A and B string and both came second for the 100m with extremely swift times. Given it was such a rainy and cold day, we’re pretty excited to see what they could do in good weather with electronic timing! In the triple jump, Emmanuel Nwaobodo leaped to first place and Cian O’Donnell came second. In the shot, Emmanuel came first and Joel Hawes came second. We also won the A and B string for 800m (Matthew Rallison, Liam Garrett), 1500m (Thomas Archer, Liam Garrett), 3000m (Seyfu Jamaal, Matthew Rallison), 3000m steeple chase (Charles Hardy, Andy Barnes).
With such a small team, everyone contributed to as many events as possible. In her first SAL ever, Rose Garrett showed the seniors how to do this by putting in fantastic performances in the 400m hurdles, long jump and 1500m. Jenny Wing and Justine Oldham “were informed” by the team captain that they were volunteering for the pole vault only hours before the event. They got a crash course in vaulting on the coach trip and bravely (albeit, unsuccessfully) competed in the event. Note for next time to try this new method everyone refers to as “training” before a competition. Daniel Aka showed us that no hurdle is too high, by leaping over the 110m hurdles – in his first ever attempt at the event – to second place. Daniel also very graciously agreed to run the 400m – no one ever ‘wants’ to run the 400m, so this gesture was hugely appreciated!!
The last event of the day was the mixed gender 4x400m relays. This was a new event to the SAL and great fun because it was impossible to guess which team was ahead at each leg. Nevertheless, as expected, we put in solid performances, coming second in the A string (Ruairi McGonagle, Noëlle O’Regan, Rosa Serafini, Seyfu Jamaal) and first in the B string (Thomas Archer, Ella Conlon, Naomi Conlon, Matthew Rallison).
Of course, all of the above was only possible with the help of Head Officiator Jonathan Litchfield and his team of volunteers: Pete Holland, Dave Walton, Seb Takvorian, Jessica Vinluan, Andy Barnes, Charles hardy and Daniel Aka.
The sheer number of first and second positions was truly outstanding and shows how far Heathside have come after moving up from the third division only 5 years ago. Despite the gaps in events and low number of officials, we were a mere 3.5 points behind 2nd place. In summary, this was the furthest away match with the smallest team and we still did a phenomenal job. With your support, we should be back to winning ways in Ipswich on 15th June. Get it in your diary! COYH!!!
Provisional results:
• Basildon AC – 208.5
• Ryston Runners – 185
• London Heathside – 181.5
