Triffic Trail and midweek Stag
Thursday last saw Heathside play host to neighbours Barnet and District AC at Finsbury Park for their annual Golden Stag Mile, which naturally meant we had a fair number of entrants over the evening's races.
Liam was our best man at the Stag, seeing off Garrett very-senior, Ed, by five seconds for third place overall. Kelly T took a chunk out of the ladies' club record for the distance in 5:21, closely followed by another Garrett, Rose, who, despite competing as an U15, was also inside the previous club record mark.
There were some slightly cagey time predictions for the race seedings which led to an animated discussion on Facebook prior to the event, not to mention Francois winning his heat by over ten seconds. Those of you who like to lie shamelessly about your race prospects will be pleased to note that entries are now open for the club 5k handicap on 18 July in Highgate Woods.
Another well-established local race that took place last week is Trent Park RC's Triffic Trail 10k which also had a bumper crop of Heathsiders in attendance. Emilia and Tammela both provided reports for this, which I've seamlessly spliced together as follows:
Emilia: Fresh from her stay in Nepal, Alice Hosking stormed ahead early on, hotly pursued by Richard Peachment and Satu Hietanen. Alice’s experience of living at altitude helped but, as she confessed later, she hadn’t done much running and paid for it when Satu and Richard overtook her halfway
Tam: Satu was first Heathsider home, pipping Richard by a few seconds, with Alice not far behind.
Emilia: “It was great to see Tara Tapper back running after a lengthy injury. In all, an enjoyable morning was had by all, with the bright yellow goody bag as a welcome bonus.”
Tam: The finishing straight was a seemingly endless 800m of uneven grassy footing with a headwind -- not ideal for any kind of kick! A tough but enjoyable race all around with a decent goody bag (except for those weird cinnamon soft drinks...I haven't had the courage to try mine yet) and technical t-shirt.
(Full results are below, and Satu, Nick Dodd and Lynn Evans look to have placed in their respective age groups.)
Elsewhere
Chris Hewertson: I ran the Stuttgart Lauf half marathon on Sunday 25th. Blistering heat in 1:35:35
Lenny Martin: "I "ran" the Marathon du Mont Blanc yesterday. About 3,000m of climbing, and some savagely technical trails meant it wasn't much of a run for a lot of the course, but did ok to come 590th from a field of 2,271 in 6 hours and 52 minutes."
Simon H: "On Saturday eve I ran in the Salomon Sunset Series 10k at Box Hill. Fairly brutal in terms of ascent - around 400m climbing, or walking if you've missed as much hill training as I have. No sunset though due to the heavy cloud. I finished 84th overall (77th male) in 57:19 mins. Saw Daniel Johns there too who was much quicker (sub-50 and 21st place).
Gareth M: "I made a last-minute decision to do the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health 5k at Regents Park yesterday and ran a slightly frustrating 18:33, trailing in the wake of 2 Highgate youths who quite literally disappeared into the distance. Morning improved by bumping in to Jim C and co on the 9am group run by chance and tagging on to their journey back to Highgate."
Bas Vlaming: "Last Friday, I skipped work drinks and went for a 10k race in the Amsterdamse Bos instead. It was quite a pleasant route through mostly forest, 48.21 and 243rd place out of 1070."

Sam Thompson spent several days earlier in the month taking part in what looks like some brutal Irish parody of the Tour de France and has submitted the following brief report:
"The week before last I competed in the Transatlantic Way Race (http://www.transatlanticway.com/), a self supported 2,500km bikepacking race following the Wild Atlantic Way around the west coast of Ireland. I finished in 8 days 1 hour and 22 minutes, provisionally 11th place, averaging 312.3km per day and including a 500km non-stop all-night stint over the final day and a half. Only around half of the 90ish riders who started the race made it to the end, which says a lot about the harsh up & down nature of the route and the conditions we faced, which even the locals said were particularly wet and windy for the region (I was even thrown off my bike by a sudden crosswind at one point).
"This was far more than just a race. I have too many tales to recount from this adventure to do justice on a short report but I plan to write up some of my experience in the near future. However, highlights include the friendliness and generosity of the locals, the camaraderie between fellow competitors and the all-consuming thrill of having a single focus day after day: riding a bicycle as far as one can.
"For those who didn't follow the race at the time, you can replay the excitement of watching dots representing cyclists race around Ireland here: http://trackleaders.com/transatlantic17. I for one find it fascinating!
"Finally, a big thanks to everyone who sent supportive messages throughout. It's easy to lose contact with the real world during such an event but each and every message had a real impact on me and was such a motivational boost during the difficult times."
