Triffic trail-blazing at Trent Park, the Hillingdon triathlon and Crockford sets a new record

In part 2 of this week’s report, we have some outstanding performances in the hot and hilly Trent Park Triffic Trail 10k, where Heathside ladies won a prize in almost every category, great performances in memory of George Stewart at the Hillingdon triathlon and another successful record-breaking day for Pete Crockford.

Trent Park Triffic Trail

An impressive number of Heathsiders (twenty five) travelled to north London on Sunday to run in the Triffic Trail 10K.  This is a scenic, well-organised race through woods and over the toughest hills in Trent Park, made extra hard this year by the hot weather.

Andrew Prystawsky led Heathsiders and the men’s team home in a speedy 41:24, with Annabel Litchfield following a few seconds later, securing prize for first senior and 2nd overall female.  Rajiv Ratan and Mark George followed next.  Mark’s run was particularly special as it was his newborn son’s first outing to cheer his dad on in a race, which doubtlessly helped Mark win perhaps his first ever prize for running, as 3rd V50.

Sue Rust sped in next in 44:58.  Satu then had an exciting race with David Hallam for the next place.  Satu’s experience of Trent Park’s toughest hills and competitive reaction when spotting a fellow Heathsider overtakiing her won through, at least for this year.  Her efforts were rewarded with a prize for 1st female V45.

Further down the field, both Tammela Platt and Nilesh Goswami had fantastic runs, finishing faster than last year – a true achievement, given the heat.  Edyta was pleased with her last minute decision to race, finishing in under 55 minutes despite minimal training, whilst Rachel showed true Heathside grit by fitting in the race on her way to the airport.  Caroline White also deserves a special mention, finishing 2nd in her age category.

Overall, it was a successful morning for Heathside, with the ladies winning prizes in almost category (Annabel Litchfield – 1st FS, Sue Rust – 3rd FV, Sue Hietanen – 1st FV45, Gail Mackie – 3rd FS, Emilia Vynnycky – 2nd FV45).  It was also hugely enjoyable, made special by the water melon handed out at the end and the thoughtfully-compiled goody bag, including energy bars and popcorn, nicely complemented by toothpaste and vitamin D tablets.

Harry Hawkes, 10M, Thames Ditton

Pete Crockford was the sole Heathsider at the Harry Hawkes 10M race in Thames Ditton and continued to make it harder for future Heathsiders to set a club record in the V60 category (65:24), by knocking off 5 minutes from the current club record.  He comments that it was “Hot and flat, but some uneven off-road crossing commons and on tow-path. Scenic past Hampton Court.” It turned out to be a great day for him, as he came first V60, winning a bottle of bubbly in the process.

Orion fell running race

Seven Heathsiders ran in the Orion Fell running race last Friday evening, billed as the only category A Fell Race inside the M25, using several different ups and downs around Yardley Valley to include enough ascents per mile for it to qualify as a Category A fell race.  It occurs on the longest day of the year so that, despite starting at 8pm, most runners finish during daylight hours.  Lee Connor was first in for Heathside men in 25:02, followed by Thomas Godec and Philip Duggan, with Chiara Borg (27:49) coming in first for Heathside women and 3rd female overall, with Marco Maserati, Richard Peachment and Emma Gregory following soon after.

Hillingdon Triathlon, Hillingdon Sunday June 24.

Gavin sent in the following report from the Hillingon triathlon:

“Thirteen Heathsiders traipsed off at an ungodly hour to take part in the quirky Hillingdon Triathlon. Part of the idea was to celebrate the life of club stalwart George Stewart, who died  of cancer earlier this year. George was also a member of Hillingdon Triathlon Club, and a regular star of this event. This might be the last of these three-a-year events at this site (building works may force them to relocate).

This wonderfully odd triathlon took place on a lovely summer’s morning this time. The 7.30am lake swim is a bit over 600 meters, and this is followed, uniquely, by the 6.1km run which includes a bit of cross-country (most triathlons have the run last). It ends with a 25km cycle, and when you finish you get a fresh jam doughnut, a Coke, and, this time, a mug and muffler.

Sarah Duke was the third woman in a time of 1:34:44, which included a 13:18 swim (5th fastest woman). Jackie Wastell was the first super veteran (and fifth woman overall)  in 1:36:46, which included a 49:33 cycle (4th fastest woman).

The first Heathsider home was Martin Potter in 14th place in 1:25:21, making him the third super-vet. He was followed in 17th place by Howard Gold, who managed to beat Martin in both the run and the cycle but was let down by his swimming. Dominic Jackson and Rick Hewett were next, coming in together, (officially 1:29:56 and 1:29:58).

Also taking part were Gavin Evans, Ruth Miller, Gabi Johnson, Dave Walton, Andy Barthorpe and Ken Townsen (who was feeling unwell and had to end his race after the swim). Nick de Sausmarez, who inspired our participation, took part as part of a relay team.”

Parkruns:

Many took part in parkruns this weekend, with several doing both a park run and racing later in the weekend.  Congratulations for first place finishes go to Annabel Litchfield (Highbury Fields, 19:50), Rebecca Bunting (Oakhill Park, 18:09), whilst David Fallon gets the prize for the most exotic parkrun, running in the Firenze parkrun (Florence, Italy).  Full results can be found here.
