UYDL, Great Manchester half and two ultras
This week’s race report includes Heathsiders in action over a wide range of distances from 100m to 34 miles, with the U20/U17 athletics, the Stratford Speed, ultras in the South Downs and Lancashire and the great Manchester 10K and half.

With the athletics season now well underway the club's U20/U17 athletes took a break from exams or half term to compete in the 2nd UYDL with a coach organised to take them to Basildon.
Despite lots of gaps in the team (no U20W track athletes and few middle distance runners) The club finished an initial 3rd place although after official points are added we will slip to 4th. The Team finished top of the field events
Among ahost of PBs athletes trying events outside their comfort zone there were 6 event wins 5 by Heathsiders Trey Corlis (110mH), Thomas Wassermann (U20M SP & HT), Elkie Baker (U17W DT) and the U17M 4x400m in a new club record of 3:45.08. Sam Turner set a new club record in the 1500mSC with his time of 4:38.12 1s outside ESAA standard but ranking him 8th in the UK

“ I had a fantastic time racing at Stratford Speed on Sunday. It was a heavily attended meet with some of the UK's top sprinters competing. I was delighted to come away with a 100m PB, including breaking the 19 second barrier twice!”

As part of the trend to hold specialist meetings.Chelmsford hosted a meeting dedicated to hurdles. Three Heathsiders took part Suraya Frost, Malakai and Trey Corlis with Trey twice setting new PB’s and Club records.

South Downs Way 50K, 26.05.24
Sarah Swinhoe sent in the following report from the South Downs:
Three London Heathside women: Rebecca Bunting,Tina Bergman and Sarah Swinhoe, set off from North London at 4:30am to travel down to Sussex. The first challenge of the day soon reared its head early : unreliable tubes meant that one of us had to make the journey to London Bridge on an Uber bike in the sheeting rain.
Heathsiders love a trip to the South Downs (SD) This race , the SD 50k, is a point to point trail race from Falmer, home to Sussex and Brighton Universities, as well as Brighton and Hove Albion, to Eastbourne mainly along the South Downs Way. The race passes through the South Downs National Park before finishing over the white cliffs of Beachy Head. The route takes in over 3,500 feet of elevation gain and descent. That's a lot of ascent as we found out the hard way.
The weather was perfect really, we had all seasons along the course and the wind and sun were generally in our favour, and there was a great mix of solitude along the SD and hearty support in the villages. It's a beautiful and brutal course but the advice is clearly to train for the hills. There's a lot of them.
Rebecca led the women's race from start to finish, and gave most of the men a run for their money (business as usual) Tina came third last year and had an even stronger run to finish in 2nd, with Sarah completing the podium in 3rd place. Rebecca smashed the course record , taking off over 16 minutes, I believe.
We celebrated by buying Crocs for the battered feet of the winner and sipping on alcohol- free beer on the replacement bus to Polegate. Rock n Roll all the way. A very special thank you to Vali and Kinga who travelled down to cheer us all on.

Panopticons Ultra (34 miles), 25.05.24
Rebecca Marshall sent in the following report from the Panopticons Ultra last weekend
I was lucky to have glorious weather at the weekend when I tried out a new 34 mile self- navigation A to B ultra in East Lancashire. Starting in Blackburn, it links the 4 'Panopticons' (open air sculptures designed to attract visitors into the countryside). It conveniently finished at a village pub where the award was a free beer rather than a medal. I finished 5th female out of 18 in a time of 8 hours 13 mins.

I ran the Great Manchester Half Marathon on Sunday, once again representing Welsh Masters in a grudge match vs England.
It's a hilly course visiting the Ethiad and the Theatre of Dreams ( home of the mighty FA Cup winners) before finishing back in the centre. I managed to get round in 74:20 and 30th overall.
