YA track & field opener, seaside 10k prizes & more
Sixteen of our most dedicated young (U15) athletes took part in their first track & field fixture of the season on Saturday, coming in just ahead of local rivals Highgate, while many of our seniors were duathling, running round trees or winning team prizes in various bank holiday weekend adventures. The evidence is multi-media-tastic. If your plug-ins don't crash...
Heathside has a thriving youth athlete section thanks to the tireless efforts of our coaches and their support staff, and the U15 and U13 contingent of that section got a chance to take to the tartan and the field for the first fixture of the Youth Development League this past season (our older young athletes are sustaining (in some cases trumping) the efforts of the seniors in the Southern Athletics League)
Four of our U15 Heathside boys, seven U15 girls and five U13 girls turned out in mainly sunny Richmond at St. Mary’s University track on Saturday to rack up 243 match points, finishing 4th out of six teams and one place ahead of rivals and neighbours Highgate. Perhaps Adrian wasn’t joking when he said that the academic venue’s “all pervasive aura of intellectual endeavour and empty beer bottles was an inspiration to us all”.
Across a range of events we managed eight first place finishes, two of which came from Molly in the throws and two from Isayiah in the sprints – congratulations to them but a well done to all the athletes for trying their utmost in as many events as the rules would allow.
Turning our attention for a moment to the tireless efforts of the young athlete coaches and the support crew who spent the day with the young’uns in Richmond, special mentions are due to Peter Snell for relentless work in the field, ably backed up by Suzette and Dominic. Rachel, Kabir and Adrian may have done “boring things with forms” but no forms=no points.
At this stage yet another reminder, but no less sincere for the repetition, that we really do need volunteers to fill these roles – if you can fetch javelins you can help the club score points. If you can help, or think you can/want to help please email Tom Aldred (tomaldred@hotmail.com) or just turn up to the next YDL, on 1 June.
“If you are, or can bring with you some 11, 12, 13 and 14 year old athletes with you all the better,” says Adrian.
Those of us who missed out on the YDL can relive the day’s events via photos available on our Facebook group (will try to move them to Flickr as well, for the non-FBers) and via slow mo action videos on our YouTube channel. It’s multi-media-tastic:
(If the embedded player isn't showing up you can see the videos here, and there are more if you dig around our YouTube channel...)
Moving on to the Heathside senior ranks Elspeth, Jackie and Barbara scooped a team prize for their combined efforts over a fast, largely flat 10k in sunny Whitstable on Monday, and Leigh was first woman in Torrington AC’s oldest race, a hilly 2.8miler that goes “around THE tree” (guess what the race is called ...). We also had Gavin running a good Richmond Half but finishing 30s short of his PB on what was a warm day for a long race, and second claimers Isobel Rea and Steve Brookes out running quality times.
Parkruns were a popular choice this weekend, with Chris and Ant doing a nice 1-2 in the Finsbury edition, (Chris isn’t down as Heathside in the results, but given that he’s already steeplechased for us in the SAL I’d say it’s a done deal. Hope so.), Rick and Dom a 2-3 at Ally Pally, and Tom shaving more than a minute off his South Manchester parkrun from last week with a blistering 15:49 around Preston Park in Brighton, even though it’s far from his best. I was going to reference the Steve Ovett statue in Preston Park, but apparently that was stolen …
