Zurich and Milton Keynes Triathlons, LICC, Watford Graded Open, Harlow and New Forest 10 and much much more

There was a clutch of triathlons (the collective term, or perhaps that should be a triumph of triathlons) this weekend (well Milton Keynes and Zurich),  some impressive performances on the track and various road races ranging from 5ks to half marathons which kept many Heathsiders busy in the past week. There were also some cycling sportives to add to the mix.

TriathlonsIn the triathlon arena – Ruth and Chris both had great races at Milton Keynes, Ruth coming first in her age category and Chris second in his. Ruth’s comment was short and to the point : “ surprisingly tough (very windy and undulating) bike course but balmy water temperature!".

Simon Hazel had quite an epic time to say the least, and a little more to say than Ruth about  his impressive Iron man in Zurich - he wrote this about his adventures: "With the announcement of a non-wetsuit swim and a weather forecast of 35 degrees all my finishing time predictions had long been bundled out of the window. Race day morning and after a brief warm up in Lake Zurich the hooter sounded and my 2399 fellow athlets started out on our 226km journey to the finish line. However, a major schoolboy error with my starting position meant for  about 2 minutes I thought my race was over. Getting punched, kicked and ducked and swallowing mouthful after mouthful of lake water I was ready to call it a day and headed to the nearest paddle board to cough up the lake water and re-compose myself. It took a while but I convinced myself that not having a wetsuit hadn't suddenly turned me into a terrible swimmer and I'd trained too long and too hard for it all to be over so soon. So I got underway again, felt more relaxed and started passing lots of back-markers, in fact by the end of the swim I'd gone from dead last to 1431st. After a swift-ish transition it was out on to the 180k bike course as the temperature steadily rose in to the 30s. The course was relatively flat with only 1300m ascent so there was plenty of opportunity to get on the aerobars and peddle like you stole it. I went through the first lap in under 3 hours and was making good progress. However, on the 2nd lap I had a few nutritional issues due to the heat and a random back spasm at about 130k, which meant it I was in a lot of pain when on the aerobars. They'd also got the forecast wrong because on my second ascent of 'The Beast' it was 38 degrees and peaked at 39 Celsius on the final climb up 'Heartbreak Hill'. I'd slowed on the second lap but had still managed to move up to 1085th place.Another swift-ish transition and it was only the marathon to go. Only! My back was still causing problems but I was going to cross that finishing line even if I had to walk all the way. Fortunately, I managed to run most of the 1st lap (59 mins) but from then the run became run-walk which became more walk-run as lap 2 took 63 mins, lap 3 68 mins and the final lap 67 mins. My marathon time was 4:18 and I crossed the finish line in 12:15:35. Good enough to bring me up to 877th overall. Lots of lessons learned to be applied to my training over the next year before I take on Challenge Roth and I've nearly raised a £1000 for Richard House in memory of my recently passed and much missed mum. So plenty to be thankful about." Full results are given below.

Track
There were three track events with a plentiful scattering of PBs and first places at the Watford Graded open meeting on wednesday, the LICC track event on Saturday and in the U13 southern inter county match where Liam Garratt came first in the 800m race and was captured on this youtube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-eukG7SQzM. Of note - in the LICC Darnell Plummer came first in his 100m,and 200m race, Joshua Jackson also came first in his 200m race, Rebecca Bunting came 3rd in the 5000 meters with a PB, John Naylor came first and Jonathan Hopkins 2nd in the 1 mile, Tony Killilia came 2nd in 1500 meters and Darnell first in the long jump. And in the Watford Open held last Wednesday Henry Damon was first with a PB in the 200m race and James Wooldridge 1st in the 1500 also with a PB; also achieving PBs in the 1500 were Miron Woldemichael, Daniel Szajna and Johnny Naylor – full results given below. And congratulations to Adrian Essex who picked up silver in the BMAF Masters Championships - a Decathlon held over two days 27th and 28th July in Oxford.

Half marathon, 10 milers, 5 miler, 10k, 5k and 6.5kIn Harlow, Ollie Pound was happy with his first ever 10 miler  completed in 1.23.  Steve continues to churn out PBs, this week with an amazing time of 16.37 in the last Friday of the month 5k in Hyde Park, accompanied by Jacob in a time of 19.52. Tony Killilea ran a fast 10k, coming in 20th place in the Capital Challenge on 24th July. Phillip Hogg and Elspeth Storrar completed the Wimbledon half marathon in very speedy times,  coming in 23rd and 28th respectively, Elspeth coming in 2nd woman. Robert Bowler sent in two late results, one from 18th July when he ran the B2Run Munich 6.5k along with 35,000 others – as he said " a German version of the City race, a bit like running down Oxford Street on a saturday afternoon" finishing in a time of 30.27 and on 14th he ran the New Forest 10, as did Adam Mitchell, both had good runs in very hot conditions, with Adam coming in a very respectable 13th place. Some other late results came in for the  Olympic Park Anniversary 5 mile race, held on 21st July - seemed like a great event - and 11  Heathsiders took part - lead in by new member Samuel Thompson in a time of  29.37.

CyclingOn the cycling front – a largish group of Heathsiders covered the 60 miles distance from London to Cambridge in the Bike Events Breakthrough for Cancer cycle ride on Sunday 28th: Caroline White, Rosaire Gray, Steve Woolf,  Barbara Tomaszczyk, Julie Khan, Jane Higgins and Dan McKeown that I know of.  There was a late entry from last weekend where Charlotte and Paul McCrossin cycled the 120 mile cycle event Dunwich Dynamo that took place through the night with participants arriving in time for breakfast – a fry up on the beach on Sunday morning. They finished in around 7 hours – no official times given.

ParkrunsA good turnout all round it seems, with some excellent times - Sue Eadle had her first Parkrun this Saturday, there were PBs for Tim Hall, Andy Barthorpe, Dominic Jackson, Marco Dryburgh and William Roberts. Tom Aldred was first in the Isle of Wight, Anthony Hall  was 2nd at Finsbury Park, Liam Proudlock 3rd at Ally Pally and Dominic 4th at Finsbury Park. Apologies to any other PBs I have missed.
