Take your Pick with Half Marathons, Club Championships, Vets and Duathalons
Another bumper report this week with track, road racing and duathalons. Tom Aldred set down a marker for the winter finishing 4th at the Paddock Woods Half Marathon. The Club held a very successful Championships at Finsbury Park and the Vets did their stuff at Lee Valley. Heathsiders also got their feet wet at the Hampstead Heath Duathalon.
Milton Keynes Half Marathon
Gavin Evans reports “It was a baking hot summer’s day for the four Heathsiders who trekked to Milton Keynes for its well-organised and efficiently marshalled and watered ‘Festival of Running’ on Sunday May 5 (featuring 5k, 10k, half marathon and 20 mile races). Three of us ran the half, which was already sizzling when the gun went off at the unusual starting time of 10.45. When we finished after midday the thermometer was hovering around the 28-degree mark. It was an undulating figure-of-eight course that took us through some of the prettier parts of MK (yes, really, they exist), starting with a steady downhill and ending with a steep uphill. All of the Heathside times were a bit more conservative than they might have been in cooler conditions. Tom Foy had been hoping for a 1:18 PB but the heat put paid to that and he did exceptionally well to come seventh out of 557 finishers in a time of 1:19:49. Gavin Evans was next in 19th place in 1:24:32, the first super-vet. He did the first two miles in 11:56 and the last two in 14:10. Kwasi Agyei-owusu followed in 24th place in a PB time of 1:27:06. Before the race he said he would be happy with anything under 1:28 and he pulled it off. Glen Brown had an even tougher task in running in the 20-mile race under those conditions, finishing in 204th place out of 587 in 2:54:54.”

Hampstead Heath Duathlon (Pondathon)
Club Triathalon co-ordinator Filipe Cardoso sent the following report form the Hampstead Heath Duathlon (Pondathon) “After a cancelled event in 2020, the Hamsptead Heath Pondathon was back on Sunday. Although this year, you had to enter a ballot and could not enter as a team, unless you were part of a selected few.
Despite the recent cold weather, it was warm day with sunny spells. The race started with 3 lengths of Parliament Hill Lido, followed by a run and swim at the men's, ladies and mixed ponds. The final run finishes at the race track. In total, you swim 930m and run 4.4km.
This was my 2nd Pondathon and I improved my time by 2:40.”

Eastern Counties Masters League
Adrian Essex provides the following report ”In what is still one of the strangest of seasons, at the final match in another league with no points scoring, the key was so low as to be almost subterranean, but with lots of positives.
Next season, we hope, will be fully competitive again. Both the men’s and women’s teams have won their respective leagues in recent years. If we’d like to do so again then we will be recruiting in the spring.
Claudia took on the entire burden of discharging the Heathside Field Event Officiating, and Zac took to the timekeeper’s stand (just to check the electronic laser display screen had got it right, I suppose).
Unedited highlights can be seen on youtube
I think almost everyone enjoyed themselves.”
