Southern XC Relays and Road Races Home and Abroad
This week was quieter than last with the Southern XC Relays held at Wormwood Scrubs. Unfortunately we only managed two full teams with the Senior race marred by poor marshalling which appears a feature of SEAA events lately. Elsewhere Heathsiders tackled marathons/half Marathons home and abroad.
SEAA Southern Cross Country Relays, Wormwood Scrubs, 22.10.22
Club Chairman Jerry Odlin reports “With 3 Senior Mens teams entered for this event, a 4 man relay race over 4km per leg, sadly we were only able to field 1 team plus one additional runner to start a B team. Unfortunately our race was over by leg 1 when the second group of athletes consisting of about 10 teams including both of our runners, Filippe and Peter, were sent off course resulting in them running 5.2km for their leg of the race. The first group of around 8/10 teams went the right way. Yann, Jem and Conor gallantly fought back to finish in 13th place out of 36 teams. I’m pretty sure that if Filippe had been sent the right way the team would have finished 4th or 5th in a race won by Windsor Slough and Eton in 48:07. Competing and winning medals at area level is where London Heathside should be and racing cross country over a short course is excellent prep for the rest of the season. I would urge our A teams both men and women to schedule this race for 2023”
In the Juniors the U15 Boys finished a creditable 13th with it good to see Eric Beale racing again after his injury woes fastest was Sam Turner with Ben Ryan completing the trio.

Robin Hood Half Marathon, Nottingham, 25.9.22
Apologies for the late inclusion but Jonathan Shipley Reports “It looks like I was the only Heathsider at Nottingham's Robin Hood Half last Sunday. Good conditions and a well organised race. Happy to come in under 85 min. From around mile 8 I had a lot of help from, and then crossed the line with, the second-placed woman.
1st K Omar (Birchfield H) 1:05.37
59th Jonathan Shipley (V45) 1:24.26
Abingdon Marathon, Abingdon 22.10.22
Philip Hogg reported form a drink station where he was helping out:- “Just to flag 2 heathsiders in Abingdon marathon today. Deng akol finished 3,14. And allysia I think she is called, who ran the 100 miles race, was running, looking good for around 3,40 I guess something like that. Think it might be her first mara? Was watching and helping at drink stop.
Not quite sure where results are yet... 😊 It was pouring rain so they all looked like damp squibs at 11 miles, and fairly cheesed off, then the rain eased and sun came out.
Excellent course and organisation”
