Part 2: Sunday League cross-country, new club records at the Cabbage Patch and Ironman Portugal

In part 2 of this week’s race round-up, we cover the welcome return of the Sunday league cross-country, great performances at the Cabbage, the Ironman in Portugal, Chingford league and a few other races.

Sunday league cross-country in Cheshunt, 16th October 2022

Sunday saw the return of another Heathside cross-country favourite – the Sunday league in Cheshunt   Here’s Captain Laura’s report:

“It was a superbly sunny start our 2022-3 SUNDAY League XC. So sunny that several Heathsiders were seen donning suncreen as well as the traditional vest before setting out on the 5 mile course.

Dave Browne led home our men's team of 8, with a gallant run to come in P45 in a time of 32:39.  Karina Kaufman led the charge for the Heathside women with a cracking run to come home P139 in a time of 36:49. Well done to everyone who ran, wherever you finished. And to those who sustained injury, we hope you mend soon.

The post race cake and chat was interrupted for a quick presentation to celebrate last seasons Red star winners. Those who completed all 5 races were Karina, Emilia, Fabio, Marco and Bob. Congratulations to you all 🌟 Get stitching those stars on!

We were missing some familiar faces, not least co-captain Mike (who will no doubt be cooking up reasons why he still deserves a red star). We look forward to seeing you and and more at our next race, on 30 October in local Trent Park. Thanks again to everyone - racers, drivers, photographers, flag bringers, bakers and all.”

Huge thanks go to Laura for her boundless enthusiasm and support!

Cabbage Patch 10 mile, Twickenham, Sunday October 16

Twelve Heathsiders travelled to Twickenham on Sunday for the Cabbage Patch 10 mile race, previously part of the club’s road race championship.  Gavin Evans  reports:

Ed Boden continued his cleanup of the club’s V50 road running records at the Cabbage Patch 10 miler. On a perfect day for running Ed was the first of the 12 Heathsiders home, finishing in 57:10, making him the V50 winner as well as breaking his own club record. His PB was particularly impressive because two weeks earlier Ed ran the London Marathon (I managed a 10 mile PW two week after mine). The second Heathsider was Peter Gould in 59:24. Sarah Swinhoe, the only Heathside woman in the race, also broke the club record and was the second V45-55 in a time of 1:06:54.

Chingford League road 5k, Velopark, Weds 12th Oct

Pete Crockford  sent in the following report from Chingford:  “Breezy but quite humid evening under the lights, just about everyone pleased or even delighted with their runs, with an impressive PB for newcomer Alan Hughes (welcome!) and very close almost PB for Kim, which given the undulating cycle circuit is just as impressive.”

Hannah at the Great South run

Great South run, 18th October 2022

Hannah Yip tried a new distance on Sunday, and sends in her report:  “According to the BBC, the Great South Run is the world's biggest 10-mile race, but it appears that most Heathsiders stayed closer to home this weekend. It was David's longest race (and run!) and my debut over this distance. The conditions were pretty much ideal, if a little warmer than expected at the beginning.”

Ironman Portugal, 15th October

Felipe Cardoso was in Portugal last weekend, taking part in the tough Ironman Portugal. He reports:

“The IronMan Portugal was held for the 2nd time in Cascais last Saturday. Having only done one standard triathlon before, this was the first time I attempted a long distance one and I did not know what to expect.

You started off by running from the beach into the bay for a 3.8km swim, out to Estoril and back. My inexperience showed as I got kicked a few times and struggled to sight the buoys. Still, this was the shortest and easiest section, despite all my concerns.

Next, you ran to the hippodrome to pick up your bike. The two 90km loop route included climbs in the Sintra Mountains, fast riding at the F1 circuit in Estoril and the scenic road between Lisbon and Cascais. The latter section was where I struggled with head wind and could not cycle as fast as I wanted to. On the positive side, I got to spend more time enjoying the views of the Atlantic and sunny weather.

Finally, you had to run a marathon on a 3 loop course along the coast. By the end of the first lap, it got dark and my pace dropped. But the amazing volunteers, small crowds and encouragement from other athletes kept me going. “
