Comrades, Speedy Steeds 5k and Middlesex Schools Championships
There was a good mix of distances over the past week including the Comrades Marathon in Durban, a mid week 5k in Battersea Park, the Middlesex Schools Championships and a new V45 men’s club record in a 2 mile race last weekend.
Comrades Marathon, Durban, 11th June 2023
Damien Lane ran the iconic Comrades Marathon on Sunday – this is his report: “Sunday saw the 96th running of The Comrades Marathon between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. A race established to commemorate the fallen soldiers in WW1. A slightly shorter course this week - only 87.8 km finishing at the famous old Kingsmead cricket stadium.
It is an amazing event and highly recommended for marathon runners who don't fancy the 100km / 100 mile ultra distance.
Damien Lane's fifth crack at the event. And a new PB (don't mention the shorter course...), finishing in 7:14:59 for a second Silver medal. The secret to success is pacing the long hilly sections very conservatively and taking advantage of the downs in the second half. A few sub 2:40 marathon runners I met before the race found out the hard way that you underestimate the course at your peril.
The smallest medal I've ever received, but the most treasured.
The crowds are incredible, lining the entire route and providing encouragement with songs, food and the occasional sip of beer...
One request for the club committee, though. Can we authorise some "Away" Vests, that just have "Heathside" on them - I reckon 1,000 people shouted "Go London" on the day! 😊”

Despite the heat there were a host of great performances with wins for Thomas Wassermann IB 100mH, Suraya Frost JG 75mH and Elkie Baker JG Discus the latter with a new Championship best and UK leading distance of 33.83m. Both Suraya and Elkie are now both County and County School Champions.
Tristian Willhoft-King secured silver on the JB 80mH as did Issy Watkins in the JG 1500m. Oscar Hall IB 200m and George Saint IB 800m were both 3rd, George having to negotiate Heats earlier in the day.

The young athletes will now wait anxiously to hear if their efforts are enough for selection at the National Schools Championships in the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham later this month.”
