A Run on the Dark Side…

Two brave Heathsiders, Andrew Shreeve and  Sandra Marie, ventured south of the river to take part in the 2nd Dartford Midnight Marathon. Starting at 8pm, this was an 8-lap course round The Bridge Lakes of Dartford, with a special “I Beat the Midnight Marathon” tee for those finishing before midnight, an all-night tea wagon and no cut-off time (the last finisher came in in just under 6 hours).

Adam Kirk-Smith was in Norwich where he got 7th in the Lord Mayor’s City Centre 5km. Nick Dodd got a new 5km PB at Bushey - his 3rd PB at this distance in just under a month!

Simon Hazel, who we hope had got his euros before the rate nosedived, was in Frankfurt to compete in a FULL Ironman Tri, part of the European Champs so stacked with professional/elite athletes. With a total of just under 227km to cover (Swim: 3.8km, Bike: 180.5km, Run: 42.2km), Simon finished in a very creditable, but what must have been exhausting, time of 11h54m. He writes: “Following a less than ideal training plan due to working offshore for 4 of the last 5 weeks leading into the race (so no swimming or long bike rides!), I managed to exceed my race expectations. The transitions were somewhat leisurely… I finished 284th in the 45-49 age group, 1591st male and 1716th overall.”

As an alternative to a Parkrun, four of us ran in the Orion Harriers’ 2nd of 3 1st Saturday of the month Epping Forest 5-milers (next one on Saturday 6th August); Doug Rendle got a top-10 and Michael Cockings a top-15 placing in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park 1st Saturday of the month 10km (next one - 6th August); whilst 8 Heathsiders ran in the Regent’s Park 1st Sunday of the month 10km (next one Sunday 7th August), where Daniel Jackson and Joseph McKeown got top-20 placings, Cas Wright was 3rd Female and Carl Heap 1st V60. Talking of Parkruns: Tom Aldred led the field home in 16:13 at Highbury Fields, Alex Galloway at Thetford in 17:26, Andrew Welshman at Newark in 19:23.

There were also a couple of Track & Field meetings during the week, one last Wednesday (29th June) in Watford, and at Mile End on Monday. Jacob Howe writes: “A group of us went to Watford for the Open Meet, featuring 17 (count 'em!) x 1500m races and 3 x 3000m races.  With better weather than the forecast had suggested, we chalked a series of PBs and SBs, with Adam's very strong run setting a new club senior record, and missing out on the overall record by just a second. There were also a number of runs at Monday's Mile End Open.” The next SAL meet is at Luton on Saturday - see club website or Facebook for details.
