Heathside on verge of back-to-back promotions

Heathside’s track and field athletes travelled to Luton knowing that their fixture against Luton, Cambridge and Stevenage was going to be challenging as well as crucial, with each of those teams lying close to us in the league table.

However consistently strong performances saw what, for a long time, was a very tight lead over the host club eventually turn into a substantial winning margin and a big shout must go to Heathside’s youth who swept into the team and swept the opposition away.

I’d thought before the fixture that our performance, particularly as far as the men were concerned, would be weakened by the absence of some star names but as it turned out, the team was strengthened by a wonderful showing from our young athletes. Anna McAllister, Naomi Conlon, Afolabi Soboyede, Luke Gray, Liam Garrett, Antanas Weston, Caspar Schulze and Jem O’Flaherty are all Under 17s, yet all performed like seasoned athletes.

Heathside’s youngest athlete on the day, Liam, won the 1500m B race with a massive personal best in a superbly judged run. Genevieve Weston (U20) is a veteran by comparison and demonstrated a mastery of hurdling at both the 100m and 400m. But the teenagers didn’t keep all the superb performances to themselves. Stephanie Kleynhans broke the club overall women’s triple jump record with a leap of 10.91m, one of a number of outstanding performances by her on a day when she accrued a magnificent personal tally of 18 points.

Four other Heathsiders racked up double figures:

  • Noëlle O’Regan achieved a personal best despite having flown in from New York only the day before

  • Izaiah Turner competed admirably in all four throws

  • Ivan Ross, who was just getting over a bout of illness, won the 400m hurdles B race despite barely arriving in time to hear the starter’s gun

  • New recruit Dan Pettitt ran superbly in the 800m, 3,000m and steeplechase.

Among the other athletes, Alishia Abodunde was rewarded for a strong showing in both sprints with a PB in the 200m of 27.4 secs and there was a PB double for Rebecca Piggott in the 1,500m and 5,000m. There was a further impressive PB for Charles Hardy in the 1500m with a powerful display of front-running.

This was another day to be proud to be Heathside and another day to be hugely optimistic about the future. With a new track on the way and plenty of young talent at the club we can believe that Heathside is well on its way to becoming recognised as a force in track and field.

Finally, a big thank you to the officials (Chris, Ivor, Gianni and Tony), who helped to organise the match and ensure that everything ran smoothly. Thanks also to the coaches (Mark, Chris, Zac, Kabir, Mike, Jacob and Nathan) who helped make these fantastic results possible, and thanks to all supporters who came along.
